How do you Choose?
by Suzanne Rock

Hi everyone! Thanks for having me on the blog today. I’d like to use this opportunity to take off my writer’s hat and talk to you a little bit – reader to reader. There has been an explosion of ebooks in the past year. Now more than ever, authors have options when it comes to publishing their work. As a result, the market is flooded with new authors and new titles.

When I got a new Kindle Touch for Christmas, I wanted to fill it up with books. I wanted to buy from my favorite authors, but I also wanted to find new stories as well. As I flipped through the Amazon book lists and browsed the different pages, a thought occurred to me. How do readers choose their books?

All of us have our favorite authors, those we autobuy every time they have a new release. I’m not talking about them. When you’re browsing in the book store, what makes you pick up one book over another?

While searching Amazon, I learned a lot about myself and my book buying habits.

  1. I buy books based on genre. My top three favorites are Romance of all subgenres (of course!), thriller and fantasy. If the mood strikes, I’ll buy a science fiction. I rarely buy outside of these genres.
  2. I buy based on personal connections. This goes beyond the occasional spam email or response on a yahoo loop. If someone has taken the time to form a relationship with me, then I will more often than not put their name in a search engine and see what comes up.
  3. Some people (myself included) really do judge a book by its cover. A cover doesn’t have to be flashy or eye-catching, but shouldn’t look like your fourth year old put it together, either.
  4. I’m a sucker for a catchy blurb. After a book passes the first three criteria, I read the blurb. You can tell a lot about a book from the blurb. Often you get a flavor of the author’s writing style and can see if it is something that agrees with you. If the blurb is well written, you have an idea of the main characters and the plot. If it doesn’t grab me from the get-go, I pass.
  5. Reviews really do matter. I look at the amazon reviews. (Does anyone else?) I discount the 1-star reviews simply because I’ve found too many of them to be nasty. I also discount the five star reviews, because I know many authors (not all) have family and friends rate books and the validity of those reviews is often suspect. I read the 2-4 star reviews because (most of the time) I find them to be more open and honest.

This is why it’s so important to review the books you love. You bring new readers to the authors you love, which in turn brings them more revenue. More revenue means that the author can cut back on the day job and spend more time writing the books you love.

Using this process, I’ve managed to fill up my kindle with a lot of great reads. So I’m asking all of you, do you have a process for finding new books? If so, what is it?

ABOUT THE BOOK / WHISPERS

Rose is skeptical when Lady Denville hires her to take care of some ghosts in her townhouse. She expects to find a nest of rats or branches scraping against a window. Instead she finds two sexy spirits intent on fulfilling her every sexual desire. They introduce her to a whole new world of pleasure — and a curse that may destroy them all.

Lionel and Jonathan have been trapped in the townhouse for decades, waiting. When Rose walks in, they know that she is the one with the power to save them. The key to their freedom lies within reach, and both men must put aside their differences if they ever hope to break the curse that binds them to the townhouse. As the men set out to seduce Rose and gain their freedom, their sexual desire turns into something more. Now they must be honest with the woman they love, or stay imprisoned in the spirit world forever.

EXCERPT

Rose stood at the top of the stairs and listened. The moans were louder now, and she could easily distinguish the two tones. She scanned the area around her, but it was too dark to see much beyond her hands.

She straightened her light green dress, chosen to match her eyes, and poked a wispy blonde curl back into her twist. If Lady Denville indeed had guests up here, then Rose had to make sure to look her best.

She picked up a candle off the nearby end table and lit it. The soft glow illuminated the hallway, which looked as if it hadn’t had a good dusting in ages. Thick velvet curtains had been pulled over the windows, blocking any light. It was so unlike Lady Denville to keep her upstairs closed up like this.

Besides the depressing atmosphere, nothing seemed out of the ordinary with the crimson carpet and dark wood walls. Rose took a deep breath, steeled her jaw, and stepped forward.

The noises filled the air, fanning her desire from a small spark into a large flame. They were smooth and melodic, almost blending with each other. Her body warmed, and she placed her hand to her cheek. Her husband wasn’t overly amorous, and it had been a long time since she had enjoyed the pleasures of the bedroom. The noises spoke to something feminine and primal deep inside her body. It awoke and rushed through her system, leaving her breathless.

The sensations felt…strange. She had not felt anything so strong before, not even with her own husband. What could be making her feel this way, and could it alleviate the ache forming between her legs? She inched forward a step, then two. With each small advance, her desire grew until she found it difficult to concentrate on the matter at hand. She paused as a name echoed off the walls.

“Jonathan.”

Her skin tingled with sexual awareness as the deep, commanding voice rippled through her body. Rose slid her fingers along the low-cut edge of her dress, then dipped them between her breasts. How did it get so warm in here?

And who was Jonathan?

She continued to the very end of the hall. It was darkest here, the heavy curtains in the windows blocking all light. She heard new noises now, like the shifting of furniture. They seemed to be coming from behind the large wooden door. A low glow shone through the cracks as the moans grew louder.

Heat traveled over her skin as she stared at the strange light. A light breeze blew over her skin, just like it had when she was downstairs moments ago. It did nothing to cool her rising temperature or the fluttering in her stomach.

The flame on the candle flickered, then extinguished. She fought back the sudden urge to shed her clothes as confusion filled her mind. She had to know what was behind the door, not just for Lady Denville’s sake, but for her own. Rose needed to find out what was making her feel like some animal in heat.

Rose felt the familiar ache low in her abdomen. She was desperate for something to ease the building pressure between her legs, but nothing suitable was available. She resisted the urge to rip off her clothes and touch herself, for she suspected such an act would do little to alleviate the growing ache. She craved something bigger and stronger to satisfy her. The whole situation felt barbaric and yet thrilling at the same time.

Rose moistened her lips and turned the knob…

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

After over a decade in the scientific world, Suzanne needed a creative outlet. She tried scrap booking, cooking, crocheting, painting, and piano, none of which held her interest for very long. Then one of her friends suggested writing. Thrilled with the idea of creating her own worlds, she opened up her lap top and never looked back.

When Suzanne’s not writing, she can be found playing with her two daughters, testing her husband’s latest kitchen creations, or curled up with her favorite romance novel in her central Massachusetts home. http://suzannerock.com / Suzanne Rock - Night Owl Reviews Page

I'm not in the US so I won't bother with my contact info. :(

When buying hard-copy books, I actually don't stray much beyond my loyalty to previously known authors. A physical book generally has to be recommended by a friend, hugely on sale, and/or totally captivating in terms of its cover blurb for me to buy it.

My Kindle and pdf books are a different story - I mostly buy my romance electronically, and I'm always on the lookout for new stuff. I like to search Amazon and e-publishers' websites for keywords that interest me. (I love reading romances about cops, so generally the first two words I search for are "cop" and "police" :P). If a publisher doesn't have a search function, or has a shitty one (say, that only lets you search for authors' names or genre labels), I probably won't buy from that publisher.

I do also sometimes troll genres (e.g., contemporary) more generally, again on publishers' websites; in that case it's definitely the blurb that catches my interest. The blurb has to not only make the story sound interesting, it has to be well-written. If you have 3 grammatical errors and 2 spelling mistakes in your 5-sentence blurb, I can guess the whole book is going to be too badly written to bother with.

If I'm on Amazon and not quite sure from the blurb if I want the book or not, I may glance over some of the reviews. I tend to read the most negative ones first, just to see what the worst-case scenario might be.... but as with the books themselves, reviews with more grammatical errors get less weight from me.

I also like going to blogs (especially Smart Bitches, Trashy Books) and seeing what they (hostesses and readers) recommend and why. I find the caliber of reviews on this website to be much higher than those on Amazon, so I will read (some of) them. Again, I search the blog for keywords that appeal to me, and then hunt for books to read among the search results.

I hope this information is helpful to someone. I would really like to see all e-publishers making sure they have very thorough search functions on their websites, with book tags or keywords that let people search for subjects, occupations, locations, themes, etc. that interest them.

Thanks!

I choose the authors I know, those with interesting blurbs AND excerpts, or those who have a lot of good reviews. I read a lot of books so usually I only try new authors (to me) if the book is given to me or if it is available at the library but once I enjoy a book I will look for others in the series. I usually don't pay a lot of attention to the covers (although the trend for eye candy has started to attract my attention more) because I used to be embarrassed by so many of the covers and they never really seemed to match to contents.

Thanks for sharing, nice new twist on haunted houses! Good luck with the new release.

My process for finding new books is reading lots of blogs, author websites, receiving author newsletters and browsing on Amazon. Usually I hear about new authors when their books are featured on a blog, but with authors that I've been following, I'll see their new books talked about in all of the ways I mentioned above.

I follow a number of author/blog/publisher sites. I've picked up new books based on recommendations from the sites. I do look at the reviews posted on Bn.com (I have a Nook) and Amazon, but don't use them to determine a purchase. I use the library if I can for new authors, but it's harder if books are only available in digital format. Ebooks generally tell one what the word count is, but I would rather know the number of pages.

It is difficult to pin down just one or two reasons that push me to purchase one book over another. Sometimes it is just the cover, sometimes the blurb, sometimes the author, and sometimes it is a combination. I also follow several blogs, and chats. Thanks for the contest. lisagk

I have to say that I look for a cover that catches my eye, a title that stands out or a great recommendation from other readers. I also have a few autobuy authors that I've read tons of books and know I usually am not disappointed.
That is how I tend to pick my books. Lately I have won a few books that led me to a new awesome author and that is great too.

When I am looking for new reading material and especially new authors, I generally look on blogs. I have a variety of blogs I trust based on mutual responses to books. Some authors I have found from review quotes or recommendations from fave authors. I generally always search for multiple excerpts to read & take advantage of kindle's sample.

One way I also find new authors also is from giveaways. When I win a book from an author, this allows me to try their work out. If I enjoy it, I will generally then buy other books from the author.

First off, I choose my favorite authors who have new books out. Then I choose by recommendations on blogs and reviews on Amazon. A good cover with a good blurb and review will be a purchase too.

Thank you for the giveaway!

I tend to go to one of my favorite genres and start looking at the covers. If the cover looks interesting, I'll read the back cover.

I also listen to suggestions made by friends who have the same taste in books as I do.

I enjoyed the excerpt. I'm adding this to my must have list.

Thanks,

I usually buy by genre or by my favorite author. I get most of my recommendations from the readers and authors I follow on Twitter.

I recently noticed I was buying more and more Romance books, so I decided to branch out and I bought a few Scifi Romance and a few Steampunk Romance.

This book looks like a winner! I choose my books a variety of ways. First, I have my fav authors whose books I buy almost automatically. Next, I read excerpts from books on the review blogs that I follow. I don't always read the blurb or excerpt fully, but scan quickly to see if anything pops. Often book covers will catch my eye and only then will I take a closer look.

More recently, I have become a bit more discerning as to which books I will buy or even enter for a giveaway. I admit that I am obsessed with giveaways and often spend so much time entering them that I have no time to read the books!! In addition, I don't put that much stock in reviews because, in general, because I find that too many books get 5 star (or equivalent) reviews when they don't deserve it. Highest marks should be carefully and sparingly given out and should represent an exceptionally great book. I believe that even 3 star books can be worth reading because I consider those books good tries, but need some work.

I recently judged my first writing contest and was faced with my ratings really impacting a writer's career, so I took it very seriously and tried to be as fair as possible - rating each book on its own merits without comparing it to other books in the contest. Being a good book reviewer is not an easy task and I hope one day to have the time to add my own blog to the many book review blogs. I hope to be able to write the type of reviews I want to read even if it means giving lower marks to books.

When I buy a book, there'e usually a section that lists the books that other people have bought, and I'll check those out. Also, I like to be able to read an excerpt of the book, not just the blurb. The cover's sometimes influence me, but only if it's by an author I've never read before. Sometimes though, I just close my eyes and take a leap of faith, and hope and pray the book is as good as it sounds, when I can't decide yes or no.

I base my book buying on a lot of different things. Of course I have my favorite authors that I always try to buy, love your books by the way. I do like a great cover, I have bought for a cover before. I like the blurbs too, they can really grab my buying attention. Reviews, not so much. I do sometimes seek out a book that keeps getting rave reviews. I've also discovered some new to me authors when Amazon gives free kindle books. Then I go buy up their backlist.

Hello Suzanne,

How do you Choose when I'm browsing the online book sites, what makes me pick up one book over another?

--I do buy books based on genre; My interest is Erotic Fiction primarily in M/M & Menage but I read everything; M/F, F/F, M/M/M, M/F/M, F/M/F, F/F/M, M/F/M/F, M/M/F/M, M/M/F/M/M....LOL I think you get the idea, I just LOVE to Read!!! I of course enjoy Erotic Paranormal(could never have guesses that from my name lol); Vampires, Werewolves, Shape-Shifters, Demons, Dragons, Elves, Faeries, Mermen....as well as BDSM, Erotic Romance in Cowboy/Western, Contemporary, Futuristic Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Mystery/Suspense & Historical Books.

--I will admit a do adore Beautiful, Sexy & Eye Catching Cover Art. Even if it's an Author I have never read before, that 1st look can grab me & say, "Read Me'.

--I do follow along with your buying habits because an Erotic, Sexy...grab me like the Cover Art....will pull me right into buying that Book, even from a new Author.

--I don't pay to much attention to Amazon or Barnes & Noble Reviews because I feel they can be quite bias & sometimes downright rude. But I do belong to many, many Authors' Yahoo News Groups, their Blogs, Newsletters, Review Sites, etc...& I have found such positive feedback in being introduced to new Authors & the great writing. Also the Contests & Blog Hops that they run is a fantastic way to find new Authors I may never have known before & now I enjoy their Books, Authors such as yourself. :)

Just like your Book "Whispers" Suzanne, it has Very Sexy Cover Art that is extremely Eye Catching ;) & the excerpt such a HOT Teaser, Oh I just HAVE to read MORE! ;)

I would very much appreciate if I could be entered into your contest to win and eBook copy of Whispers. Thank You.

Take Care & Wishing You the Best of Health,

The cover has to catch my eye. Then I read the blurb and try to find an excerpt. After that, I look at the reviews. If the book still peaks my interest, then I usually buy it. Can't wait to read Whispers.

I am mostly interested in romance right now. I have read some suspense novels so might again later on. I like to read excerpts and free reads. If I like the author I will visit their website and check out their books. I also enter contest and that gives me a chance to read a new to me author. I like using goodreads for reviews, but I discount most 1 and 5 star ratings. christina_92@
