Holiday and Halloween Hoopla - Ready or Not, Here it Comes!
by Naomi Bellina

Halloween! This has always been my favorite holiday for several reasons. First, because Halloween signals the coming of the most wonderful season, autumn. I love to watch the leaves change colors and feel the nip in the air. Living in the southern United States, I'm especially grateful for the cooler weather and welcome fall with open arms.

Second, it means the end-of-year holidays are about to start. Now, I have mixed feelings about those, kind of a love/hate relationship. I love what they symbolize and how they're SUPPOSED to play out, but hate that they usually end up being a lot of work and stress, and often a letdown. I don't know about you, but my life rarely resembles the ideal that is portrayed on television, with blissfully carefree days of holiday food preparation, shopping, and attending all sorts of magical events. While there are certainly special moments to be enjoyed, there is also a lot of rushing around with too much to do and too little time, as I feel the pressure of trying to do everything!

Intellectually I know most people don't really live a television life, but part of me wants the holidays to be perfect. So, I approach Thanksgiving and Christmas with mixed emotions, and optimistically hope for the best.

But Halloween…I can make that holiday whatever I want! No family obligations, no meals to prepare, no gifts to buy. I can chose to hand out treats to the kids or not, and no one will look at me with horror if I tell them I'm just not up to celebrating Halloween this year. Try doing that with Christmas!

The best part about Halloween, however, is I get to chose who or what I want to be. Depending on my mood of the moment, I can be anyone or anything my mind can dream up. Am I feeling cute and sexy? How about a fairy? Or wicked and wanton? A slinky witch. Bitchy and evil? A warrior sorceress!

My favorite place to shop for costumes is the thrift stores. Do-it-myself is a must! Finding the perfect clothes and accessories at a bargain price is part of the fun, and if I manage to put together most of the costume for cheap, then I splurge on something wild, like purple and black striped stockings, or the perfect finishing piece of crazy jewelry, or some delicious body paints and sparkles. Face painting has become my latest delight because with my face transformed, I'm virtually anonymous when I strut around at our local outdoor street party.

Did I say strut? Yes I do! Most of my costumes manage to show far more flesh than I display for anyone except my honey. But so what if I see a client or someone I know…I'm in disguise. They won't know it's me!

I love mysteries and surprises and you will find that as a theme in my stories. Something is going to sneak up on you and catch you unawares! In my debut short book, Miranda's Travels, both the hero and the heroine want to be something a bit different than what they are. A shame they don't have the opportunity to celebrate Halloween like we do, and enjoy the chance to try on a different persona! My other book at Total-E-Bound, When Irish Eyes are Evil, introduces a sexy man with a dark secret. In Demons and Angels, due out later this year from Whiskey Creek Press Torrid, our heroine gets more than she bargained for when attending a costume party for demons. Visit my website for excerpts from my books.

Tell me about one of your favorite Halloween costumes, what it was and why you enjoyed it, and you will be entered in a drawing to win a free eBook of my latest release, When Irish Eyes Are Evil or Miranda's Travels, your choice. I'll also put your comment on my website, for more Halloween fun!

Thank you Night Owl Romance and readers for allowing me to share my thoughts and my books with you. Happy Haunting!

Mixing the Elements
by Harper Alibeck

Writing a contemporary romance with paranormal and historical elements is hard enough. Just saying "contemporary romance with paranormal and historical elements" is a mouthful, and as one helpful writer once comments, "throw in Young Adult and you really cover all the bases there!"

But even harder -- writing across three locations. Fortunately, I've been to all three (Cleveland, Toronto and Santiago, Chile). The fun part was writing about my heroine's experience as a complete beginner in Chile. While plenty of readers may be familiar with northeast Ohio and Toronto, how many have been to South America's thinnest country? Which readers have enjoyed the sheer alien delight of a pisco sour, or a techno-beat nightclub in Santiago?

Watching a squat peasant woman selling homemade empanadas (meat and cheese-filled dough pastries) on a street corner in a major world capital was one of the more fascinating experiences I had when I spent a summer in Chile. Embedding that experience into Legs brings the reader there, to experience the newness, the foreign elements, right along with Jill.

Legs is a "reincarnation romance," with Jill and Seth reliving the romance of a couple from 100 years ago. That's not a spoiler -- it's a tagline! The mystery comes as these two historians dig through archives to find the truth -- and Jill's experience in a foreign country, with poor Spanish language skills, gives that feeling of location, right down to the frustration and resignation that comes with culture shock:

EXCERPT FROM LEGS - On Amazon

The cabbie stopped the car and pointed rudely to a small hotel's sign. “Get out. $22,” he said. She converted in her head and realized that was more than 10,000 pesos, when web research told her the trip shouldn't be more than 5,000 pesos.

“No, I'll pay you 5,000, but not 10,000,” she said, stepping out of the car.

He glared at her, his Yankees baseball cap falling off his head as he turned around in the front seat. “You pay $22 U.S. We ride long trip.”

Grateful she'd thrown her bags in the backseat and not in the trunk, she quickly unloaded them. “I pay no such thing. You cheated me. I'll pay $10.”

He turned off the cab and started to get out, gesturing angrily, a string of Spanish insults pouring out of him. Two men came out of the dingy residencial he'd delivered her to and watched the scene. A short blond woman appeared and moved between them, walking over to Jill.

“You need some help?” she asked, eyebrows raised, and grabbed one of Jill's bags.

“This guy's trying to cheat me!” Jill said, exhausted and angry. At least she was out of the cab and her bags were safe. Now it was all about the price.

“He cheats everyone,” the blond laughed, her chest bouncing with mirth.

The cabbie was in Jill's face now, and she straightened to her full height, towering two or three inches over him. She didn't understand all his words but she caught “puta” here and there.

Stepping back and digging through her wallet, she found a $10 bill and handed it to him. “Here. Go away before I call the police. La policia. Vaya!” The men in the doorway slapped their thighs and laughed as the cabbie refused to take her money, arguing back with epithets. She dropped the bill on the ground and turned to the blond.

“Help? I just want to get away from him, and I'm pretty sure he didn't bring me where I need to be.” The two women dragged Jill's bags toward the doorway while the cabbie bent down, retrieved the $10 bill, then spit a huge hocker in Jill's direction. It landed on one of the laughing men, who quickly lunged at the cabbie. Rushing to the driver's seat, he jumped in, gunned the engine, and backed out of the alley, clipping a trash can.

“That's Hector. I think you just ripped off his balls and stuffed them down his throat – metaphorically.” The blond sized up Jill appreciatively and said, “You just gave those two old men about three weeks worth of gossip with that display. No one argues with Hector. Most people don't realize they've been conned until it's too late.”

“Yeah, well, I'm too pissed and tired to tolerate some asshole conning me right now. I've been lied to enough,” she said.

“Where are my manners?” the blond said, holding out a hand. “Sarah Wilton.”

Jill matched her firm handshake. “Jill Knowles.”

Sarah cocked her head to the left and narrowed her eyes . “You staying here?” she asked Jill.

“Uh, I don't think so.” She took in the filthy, peeling paint on the crooked shutters, a dead rat under the broken gutter, and the ring of old men having sex with her and Sarah with their eyes. One of them make kissing gestures toward her while the other took his hand, formed a “V” with his index and middle fingers, put it up to his mouth and stuck his tongue through it, waggling it.

Both looked at the women expectantly, as if this would work.

END EXCERPT

This scene gives some local flavor but also shows that Jill's stubbornness is cross-contextual; she doesn't change from one country to the next, one culture to the next. Hector isn't getting away with anything here. She must be in control, and she asserts it even when she can't speak Spanish well, has just spent a day and a half on flights, and is emotionally and physically wiped.

That scene tells readers far more than any description of Jill's frustration could convey. Other scenes, including a difficult journey through Chile's historical archives in Santiago, show her refusing to ask Seth for help. She's clinging to some sense of mission here, and flailing badly. Meanwhile, she's pining away for him and second-guessing having abandoned him earlier in the book (another spoiler!) -- yet she's so mule-headed that she self-sabotages at every turn, even in a foreign city where her language skills are subpar. This theme of self-sabotage, and the hero's help in overcoming it, runs through the heroine in the prequel to Legs, titled Unfinished Business (and to be published in December).

Writing about place, and rooting the characters in a place, offers opportunities for character growth. Foreign locations give the reader a window into a new, exotic world while exploring these themes. You never know when you'll turn a corner and find a street vendor selling empanadas -- a quarter is all it takes to give it a try. Reading a romance novel set in an unfamiliar city or country lets you try something new without leaving your spot on the couch -- and that might help your own character growth, too.

Michelle Marcos - Scottish Heartthrob + Contest

Enter to win a paperback copy of SECRETS TO SEDUCING A SCOT!

From Scottish Hunk to Scottish Heartthrob
by Michelle Marcos

Quick…who do you think of when I say the words “Scottish hunk?”

Is it Gerard Butler? Ewan McGregor? Sean Connery? Honest to goodness, with soft lips and hard sinews, and that delightful burr when they speak, what’s not to love about a handsome Highlander?

Well, Serena Marsh can tell you. She is the heroine in SECRETS TO SEDUCING A SCOT. Serena is an English socialite who soaks in the crème de la crème of Regency high society. A renowned columnist in her own right, she is invited to every ball and rout, and her absence from a party is a shame upon the hostess. But when her father, an ambassador, is sent to the Highlands to quell a rebellion, Serena must leave her beloved London and its glittering nightlife for the rough and provincial hinterland of Scotland.

As if that weren’t sacrifice enough, a threat is made on her life, and her anxious father immediately hires a fugitive hunter to protect his daughter from anyone meaning to do her harm. The last thing Serena wanted was a fearsome-looking Scot behind her shoulder 24 hours a day. To make matters worse, he’s brutish, unsophisticated, and he won’t take orders from her. And he’s sexy as hell!

Malcolm Slayter has fought with too many cutthroats and lawbreakers to be bullied by a spoiled English woman. He bears the brand of the slaighteur, a knave, and he knows more about the violence of Scotsmen than any man still alive. His skills in battle and criminal detection are the reason he was hired for this assignment. But there was one threat he hadn’t counted on…that the more he tried to protect Serena’s life, the more he’d end up losing his heart. Serena may bristle and bluster, but only he has been able to recognize that her heart has been wounded in a way that can’t be healed by anyone who does not love her absolutely and unconditionally. So when tragedy befalls Serena, Malcolm must prove his love for her in a way that no other man can do.

TRAILER

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Michelle Marcos has finally reconciled herself with being thought eccentric. She owns too many cats and struggles with a debilitating Starbucks addiction. How a child of Cuban parents living in Miami could become such an Anglophile is still anybody's guess. She graduated several centuries ago from the University of Miami with degrees in English and Education. Afterward, she spent a few years being one of the "cool" teachers in a middle school, and had a brief but illustrious acting career playing roles like Lusty Housemaid, Death, and (perhaps prophetically) Author. She finally found her true calling as an award-winning writer of historical romance, and has published five novels for St. Martin’s Press.

After having her heart broken, Lily Carver ran north to manage an upscale resort—and back to her longtime friend Sam Denning. Though she's well aware of how hot Sam's become, she refuses to risk her heart again. No matter how incredible his kisses make her feel...

Sam's been in love—and lust—with Lily since the summer they met. When he finally shows her how much he wants her, Lily can't resist his seduction. But Sam's a forever kind of guy and she's only interested in short, painless relationships.

Lily thinks she can protect both their hearts with a short affair to let their passion run its course, something where they both know the rules and can explore the sparks between them without getting burned. But their best-laid plans are put to the test by their undeniable attraction—and by a secret Sam's been keeping from Lily that could ruin everything.

57,000 words

EXCERPT

“Jules?”

No answer.

“Jules?” Lily called again, walking into the living room. Although their home was small, a wide bank of windows overlooked the lake and a granite fireplace dominated the space, its pink and grey façade reaching from floor to ceiling, a testament to the stonemason’s skills. A large braided rug and cozy corduroy sofas invited visitors to sit and relax while the small, dated television set revealed how little time either woman had for mindless leisure.

Juliette was curled up on the sofa, asleep. The sight of her usually up-and-at-’em sister looking so tired was a surprise but now, her face softened by sleep and without her usual wide smile, Lily could see that her sister looked exhausted and pale.

She crouched beside the sofa and laid a careful hand on her sister’s shoulder.

“Juliette?”

Slowly, Jules opened her eyes, looking bewildered for a moment. Then she scrambled into a sitting position, clearly embarrassed.

“Sorry,” she said, tucking a long strand of blond hair behind her ear. Juliette was the only person Lily knew who could fall asleep on the sofa for an impromptu nap and wake up looking utterly gorgeous and put together. If not for the fact that she was her elder sister and the one person in her family she loved above all others, Lily might be forced to hate Jules for her effortless chicness.

As it was, she felt guilty that she hadn’t noticed how run-down and tired Jules had gotten helping her run the resort. Success like they’d been enjoying didn’t happen without a tremendous amount of work and they’d both been burning the candle at both ends.

Now the trick would be to get her closed-mouthed older sister to admit she needed a break to recuperate. And from experience, Lily knew that wouldn’t be easy. Neither of them liked to admit weakness or vulnerabilities. After all, they’d learned from the best at a very young age. A Carver should never retreat could practically be engraved as the family motto.

Just another example of how Lily’s ignominious retreat five years ago, fleeing from Brent and their high-powered life in favor of a backwater career in hospitality, had let down the family. But when she looked into her sister’s wan face, she knew it wasn’t time to rehash her own shortcomings. Juliette was her priority.

“What’s wrong?” Concerned, Lily slid onto the soft sofa beside her sister. “Everything alright? You look—”

“I’m fine,” Juliette said briskly. “It was a hectic day and I wanted to put my feet up. Give me a minute and I’ll make supper.” She smiled in a show of efficiency and swung her feet to the floor. She folded the blanket and replaced it along the back of the couch.

“Do you really feel like cooking tonight? You look done in.”

Ignoring Lily’s question, Juliette hastened toward the compact galley kitchen and opened the fridge, peering inside intently.

“What do you feel like? I was thinking about doing an omelet. Do we have lettuce, if I toss together a salad?”

“You’re not up to cooking,” Lily countered. “Why don’t we go out tonight? My treat.”

Juliette’s face lightened and her smile actually reached her eyes this time. “The Hollow?” she asked as she slammed the fridge door shut. Known for thick burgers, cold beer and casual games of pool, the local bar was the kind of place where the jukebox played songs about being done wrong by a country girl. Rustic but lively and just the ticket for taking Juliette’s mind off her troubles.

“Give me fifteen minutes to hop in the shower and we’ll head out. I spent most of this afternoon repairing the hot water pipes in number twelve. I’m sweaty and gross and need to get the smell of solder out of my hair pronto,” Lily said and her sister nodded. A night out with a casual, unhurried meal would be just the thing to help her sister relax and perhaps encourage her to share the reason for her atypical mood. Hurrying to the bathroom, she called over her shoulder, “Thank God Sam stopped by and gave me a hand. He had a strap wrench and a long-handled pipe wrench in his tool box, and I put them to good use.”

“Yes, and I’m sure he’s got lots of other tools he’d be happy to lend you,” her sister teased as she collected a pile of clean clothes from the laundry room. Her mouth full of toothpaste, Lily could only fix Juliette with a baleful glare. Her sibling just laughed and continued down the hall to set the laundry away. But she quickly returned and leaned against the bathroom doorframe, her face thoughtful.

“But seriously, he’s been crazy about you since forever. If you don’t show him a little encouragement… Well, don’t be surprised if someone else decides to put the moves on him. I mean, it’s not like eligible men are thick on the ground around these parts, and Sam’s a catch no matter which way you look at it. He’s gorgeous, he’s built, he’s got all of his own hair and teeth and then some. He doesn’t live with his mother or suffer from ex-wife-itis, he’s successful and owns his own business, he raised his sisters single handedly since the age of eighteen and he’s an all around nice guy who likes kids and is kind to puppies.”

Lily rolled her eyes at the long list of virtues, none of which were exactly news to her. She wasn’t blind. Sam was a catch. Kind, funny and hardworking. Unfortunately, he had looking for long-term written all over him and Lily was looking for anything except that. Their relationship had never been passionate. They were best friends, there for each other through thick and thin, but Juliette was mistaken, imagining a connection where there wasn’t one. Sam wasn’t interested in her in any other sense. Not romantically, not sexually.

There had been times, especially in the past year or so, where she’d found herself wondering why she and Sam had never connected on another level but she’d put the question from her mind. Her therapist would have called it evidence that she was finally overcoming the emotional damage her fiancé had inflicted on her and showing readiness to contemplate another intimate relationship. But she knew the truth. It wasn’t a matter of readiness—she had no intention of getting swept up in something long-term again—but a matter of common sense.

Still, Julie’s playful admonishment stung a little. A small, teeny, infinitesimal part of her mind did wonder why she and Sam had never even explored the possibility of more. Lily might have come to her senses when it came to forever but a girl couldn’t help but feel a little piqued at not even earning a teasing pass. She’d turn him down, of course, because he’d only be joking. He’d be as horrified as she would be if they ever transgressed their friendship. Unfortunately, while she had no intention of acting on her observations, try as she might, Lily couldn’t deny noticing Sam in some very non-platonic ways.

Like when they’d gone on their annual summer camping trip to Algonquin. Settling in to their campsite after a challenging portage, she’d gotten caught up ogling Sam when he’d stripped off his T-shirt to dive into the lake. She’d been so distracted admiring the play of his muscles as he’d cut through the water with a powerful overhand stroke, that she’d managed to drop their entire meal into the campfire.

Of course, she hadn’t been able to tell him the real reason for the disaster. Instead, she’d invented a strained shoulder, aggravated by a long day’s paddle. Sam, being Sam, had been sympathetic, understanding and completely unfazed by the sight of his dinner, black and curling, in the fire stones. And Lily had been punished for her dishonesty after dinner, forced to endure his long, callused fingers massaging her “injured” shoulder with a slick muscle balm. She’d had to clench her teeth to keep from moaning, his tempting and skilled touch leaving her a quivering mass of unrequited need.

But despite the temptations, Lily knew unrequited was the way it had to be. At least for someone with her spectacularly unsuccessful romantic record.

She’d learned her lessons when her relationship with Brent Kellar imploded five years ago. In a word, it had been a disaster and she wasn’t eager to repeat the experience.

Her therapist’s sage advice echoed in her mind. You need to acknowledge what Brent did honestly and without fear or self-recrimination. When you can do that, you’ll know you’re on the road to healing.

She knew Carol was right. Because it hadn’t just been a disaster…it had been abusive.

Emotionally. Psychologically. Sexually. And by the end, occasionally physically.

Of course, it hadn’t happened overnight. Or every night. For long stretches Brent had been charming. Funny. Debonair. Romantic, even. But slowly and surely, he’d chipped away at Lily’s sense of self, at her worth and her confidence until she’d accepted as her due his cruel and manipulative behavior. She’d come to see herself as deserving of less, her shortcomings and flaws so abundant that it was a miracle he could even stomach her.

It seemed ridiculous that she could have fallen for such blatant lies but only in retrospect had she been able to see the damaging pattern that blighted her life for two years. And it had taken the visceral shock of finding Brent, pumping and thrusting into another woman, to finally jolt Lily into her self-preserving flight north.

While it might seem strange to other people, in some ways she felt grateful for her experiences. She’d learned her lesson with Brent, and it was indelibly etched in her psyche. She couldn’t trust herself to make good choices in a relationship. So no matter how tempting Sam was, or muscled, or skillful, she would never succumb to her secret fantasies. Because she couldn’t imagine her life without him or his friendship.

It was like trying to imagine the sky any other color but blue.

Sara Humphreys - Top 10 Reasons Readers Will Fall in Love with Malcolm Drew, hero of Unleashed + Contest

Top 10 Reasons Readers Will Fall in Love with Malcolm Drew, hero of Unleashed - by Sara Humphreys

10. He’s drop dead gorgeous with the biggest, most spectacular light brown eyes God ever gave a man (or a shape-shifter). The only thing better than those eyes are his firm warm lips that could melt butter or maybe his thick head of auburn hair that cries out to have you tangle your fingers in it. Then of course there’s the body that is reminiscent of a Greek God and looks like it was carved from your best fantasies. He’s equally magnificent in his golden eagle form with feathers that look like they were dipped in gold, edged with bronze and are softer than silk.

9. He’s strong as hell-- six foot four inches of solid muscle and bone. The man could quite literally sweep you off of your feet. It wouldn’t matter what size dress you wear (or take off and toss into the corner) he can pick you up as if you weigh nothing at all. Now that is sexy.

8. His number one concern is your comfort and well-being. No…really….he’s only happy if the woman he loves is happy.

7. He can use his visualization skills to travel at the speed of thought. This could come in handy when having a two a.m. chocolate-chocolate-chip ice cream craving. Malcolm would go get the ice cream and bring it to you in bed…all in less than five minutes. Oh…and he’ll feed it to you too…in bed.

6. He’s fiercely protective of the woman he loves and will do anything within his wide-range of supernatural abilities to keep you safe. Whether he’s protecting you from a speeding bullet or defending you from a verbal barb made by your scummy ex-boyfriend…the man will always stand up, stand by and stand with you.

5. He’s an alpha-male—but not a bully.

4. He can kiss like nobody’s business. Malcolm’s tongue, fingers and hands are so talented that they should be insured by Lloyd’s of London for at least ten million dollars. Although….even that wouldn’t cover it.

3. He can cook—in and out of the kitchen.

2. He can speak with you telepathically. In the middle of the most crowded room, he can whisper sinful promises along the edges of your mind and tantalize your senses from the inside out. It beats a text message any day of the week.

1. There are millions of women in the world…but he only sees you…forever.

4 Words to Seduce a Man
by Delaney Diamond
http://delaneydiamond.com

Even though I read ebooks, I’m still living in the dark ages as far as magazines are concerned. Rather than read them electronically, I have the subscriptions sent to my home every month. I seldom get through them all, but whenever I have some down time, I pick one up for entertainment. I recently read an article in Cosmopolitan titled “4 Words That Seduce Any Man…Anytime.”

That piqued my interest. Personally, I figured you could seduce a man with one word, that word being “Hello.” LOL. Still, I couldn’t wait to read what the article had to say. Apparently, the four words that would cause a man’s brain to release massive amounts of endorphins and neurotransmitters (such as norepinephrine and dopamine) are: “I want you now.” It’s even hotter when you say it in a location like the grocery store.

The article goes on to give a few more examples, such as “Oh. My. God. That thing has to be wider than a forty” or “Want to go Dutch?”

I felt like there were so many more examples missing that would have the same effect. I put on my thinking cap and came up with my own short list of ten.
  1. Oh. My. God. It’s so big!
  2. Don’t worry about foreplay.
  3. Tonight it’s all about you.
  4. Let me slip into something more comfortable.
  5. The kids are at my parents’ house, so it’s just you and me.
  6. I cooked all your favorite dishes.
  7. It’s okay if you want to hang out with the guys tonight.
  8. Let’s watch the game. I’m tired of Dancing with the Stars.
  9. There’s a new Chuck Norris film out? Sweet!
  10. Have fun in Vegas!
Okay, I decided to mix it up a bit and make some of these funny and some sexy, but any one of these should make you irresistible. Leave a comment and let me know what you think of my list, or even better, add to it.

Thanks for stopping by and good luck with the contest!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Delaney Diamond writes sweet and sensual African-American and interracial romance. Her sex scenes often incorporate heated language to seduce the hero and/or heroine. In her latest release, The Temptation of a Good Man, Celeste’s whispered “I want you so much,” made it impossible for Roarke to say no to her.

BLURB - THE TEMPTATION OF A GOOD MAN

Can true love be found after one night of passion?

Celeste Burton goes out with her girlfriends to celebrate turning thirty and winds up spending an unforgettable night with the man of her dreams. One week later, as a favor, she attends a wedding with a friend as his date and is shocked when she sees Roarke again.

Roarke Hawthorne despises cheating. Cheating tore apart his family years ago. When the physics professor sees the woman he spent the night with show up at his sister’s wedding on the arm of his brother, he knows he should keep his distance. But because of the night they set fire to the sheets in his hotel room, he can’t resist the urge to be close to her–nor can he resist the temptation to have her back in his bed.

EXCERPT

Lust flickered in his eyes, and for tense moments they stared at each other, lost in the memories of heated whispers and tangled sheets. Then, as suddenly as he’d grabbed her, he dropped her arm like a hot coal.

“Derrick doesn’t deserve to be lied to and made a fool of.” He stepped around her toward the door.

Celeste grabbed his forearm to stall his exit. “Wait, please.”

“Celeste, I can’t do this.”

She slipped between him and the door. She couldn’t be the reason for a confrontation between the two brothers, and she couldn’t bear the humiliation of Derrick finding out she’d slept with his brother the first night they met. “Please don’t say anything to Derrick. I’ll stay out of your way. I promise. You won’t even know I’m here.”

He looked down at her hand, and she followed his gaze to where her fingers wrapped around his arm. She withdrew them with haste. When her eyes found his again, desire shimmied down her spine at the hunger she saw in his.

“That’s not what I meant,” he said, his voice thick and low. “I can’t be near you. You’re too much of a temptation. Maybe you can stay away from me, but I don’t know if I can keep my hands off of you.” He slammed his palms against the door above her shoulders.

Celeste jumped, her eyes widening in shock. Shaken, she pressed back against the hard door to distance herself from him. They were too close, and the instinctive movement did little to protect her from the heat of sexual frustration emanating from his pores.

His chest rose and fell with each deep breath, and a storm brewed in his dark brown eyes. “What are you doing to me?”

The tortured question needed no answer. Even if she’d been obliged to respond, he seized her mouth before she could, and his tongue thrust between her lips. The muscular, dark cords of his arms encircled her waist and held her against his body, crushing her soft curves into each hard contour of his.

The Temptation of a Good Man is Book One in the Hawthorne Family series. Buy your copy at the following online retailers: Amazon, ARe, B and N.

Ten reasons to fall in love with My Hero, Roan
by Shona Husk

Despite the fact that Roan looks like a hideous goblin in our world (he only looks like a man in the Shadowlands) there are lots of reasons to risk that trip across Realms and get to know him better.

  1. He has a heart of gold—literally: What woman doesn’t want a man with a heart of gold, someone who will treasure her? Okay, while he can’t actually feel love because his heart is golden, he wants to love.
  2. Ex-Celtic King: Honour and loyalty: He’ll do what’s right and fight to protect what’s his (and not just his gold).
  3. Never say die attitude: While his hope of finding a cure is starting to wane he can’t just give up. If Roan gives up, he and his men all become soulless goblins, forever. The alternative is death, and he won’t condemn his him to that either. So that leaves fighting.
  4. Good with weapons: He was handy with a sword back in the day, since being cursed he’s had plenty of time to hone his skill further. If you have to fight you want him at your back.
  5. Adaptability: Instead of resisting the changes in the Fixed Realm he’s adapted. His favourite modern inventions being hand guns and movies. One is good for killing goblins and the other helps pass the time while giving him a taste of the world and eating popcorn at the back of the theatre cloaked in shadows.
  6. Well-travelled: Roan can cross between Realms at will, he can go anywhere. No airport security, passport or 12 hour flights required. He’s been everywhere, more than once, and has been places that haven’t been touched by humans for centuries. So he’s full of interesting tales.
  7. Wealthy: He’s had centuries to accumulate wealth. It’s true he can’t bear to part with his gold (a goblin would rather die), there’s still silver and gems, ancient artefacts and forgotten treasures in his collection. Some of it has been banked and can’t be claimed until he is human, but there’s still more than anyone could spend in a lifetime.
  8. Magic: He can control the Shadowlands. He can create nightmares out of dust with a thought, steal food and wine from the best restaurants in the world and craft a ring no human jeweller ever could. The only thing he can’t do is break the curse that keeps him goblin.
  9. Dreadlocks: Dreads are cool. Not everyman can carry of the look especially when the dreads are filled with amber and gold beads. This hair style manages to convey a sense that he doesn’t care about authority (because he is the authority in the Shadowlands) and yet it requires maintenance. All the regrowth has to be tended, so it shows a level of commitment. And when he cuts them off, it’s for the woman he loves.
  10. He will risk his soul for the woman he loves: After centuries of fighting the curse he’s only got a little bit of soul left, it’s enough to keep him human, but when Eliza is danger he’ll do anything to protect her. It’s all he can do when he believes he’ll never be able to break the curse and truly love her or give her life she deserves.

So if you can overlook the grey skin, yellow eyes and love of gold Roan really is a nice guy and would be a great addition to any dinner party. But would you be game to invite a goblin in?

Katie MacAlister - Dark Ones! + Contest

Dark Ones!
By Katie MacAlister

Vampires! They’re everywhere these days…or are they? If you’re not sure if that creepy neighbor who is only seen at night is one of the walking undead, or if the guy with the flashy cape and pointed canines is telling the truth when he claims he wants to make you his immortal queen, or even if the seriously sexy, angst-riddled hero portrayed in a steamy vampire novel could be based on someone real, then I’m here to guide you through the pitfalls of spotting and identifying Dark Ones.

Does your potential Dark One have a rumpled, bumpy face, and a hit-and-miss English accent? Then he’s probably Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and not a Dark One. Real Dark Ones can go all vampy (i.e. in the mood for dinner) without any visible signs, although their Beloveds usually feel their hunger, and can plan appropriately for a quiet spot where appetites—of all sorts—can be satisfied.

Does your potential Dark One cry blood? He’s probably one of Charlaine Harris’ vampires, in that case. Dark Ones can physically cry, but until they find their respective Beloveds, they usually keep their emotions buried deep inside. It’s only after they find the women of their dreams that things start to shake loose emotionally. Mostly it’s just irritation because the Beloved in question isn’t impressed with how big and bad the Dark One is—they do tend to take themselves seriously—but the overriding emotion is a powerful need to be with that woman, and who could resist that?

Does your potential Dark One sparkle? I’m afraid that if he does, he’s not a real Dark One. Although most vampires have some sort of a reaction to the sun, Dark Ones have limited abilities to frolic around in the sunshine. The sun won’t burn them to a crisp in seconds as is depicted in an old Hammer Dracula movie, but it will give them a dilly of a sunburn if they stand around in it, and left out in the sun for hours would likely result in some very painful and grievous injuries. Just one added bonus of finding a Beloved, however, is the fact that Dark Ones’ tolerance to the sun goes up. Someone asked me once why I set so many of my vampire books in the sunlight when I know the vamps have a hard time with it. The answer is I’m just mean.

Does your potential Dark One stalk around the night looking dramatically pale, wearing black leather, and has a body temperature several degrees colder than a mortal? He’s probably a demon lord, not a Dark One, although the two have a connection. Dark Ones can be created two ways: born to a Dark One father who hasn’t had his soul redeemed, or cursed to that state by a demon lord. Needless to say, Dark Ones and demon lords aren’t usually the best of buddies, although they do share a love of gadgets. Why? No clue.

Does your potential Dark One glide around a castle with giant white bun hair and looking as if he’s a hundred years old? He’s definitely not a Dark One. For one thing, no Dark One would ever be caught with dramatic bun hair (it’s just not their thing), and for another, Dark Ones don’t have magical gliding abilities. In fact, they can’t magic up anything—they can’t shape shift, they can’t create things out of nothing, and they can’t enslave others’ minds, although they can do limited mind pushes. More often than not, though, they prefer to use their seductive selves to persuade, usually enticing women to do whatever the Dark One desires. We’re just lucky that what they desire most is fun for both parties involved.

If you run into a sexy, brooding, mysterious man in the darkest depths of night, you might have just found a Dark One. Then again, you could be facing a perfectly normal man who is utterly confused when you fling yourself on him and demand he drink until he’s satisfied, so you probably should run through the checklist above to see if he qualifies as someone who desperately needs you to save him, or if he’s likely to call for a restraining order.

Happy hunting!

TECHNO CRAZED
Hacked Investigations, Book 1

Private investigator Hannah Franklin's life is turned upside down after being contacted by a former employee of MAX Home Security, the leader in security services. But they're not just protecting people anymore. Hannah's informant claims to have proof that MAX has ordered the assassination of politicians who stood against the corporation.

When her informant is killed and an attempt is made on her life, Hannah has no choice but to contact a freelance hacker. Her only hope now lies in the hands of a man she never expected to welcome back into her life.

Ian Bradley has lost his girlfriend and his job, as well as having acquired a very annoying gnome. Now his ex, Hannah, is in danger, and she needs his help. Ian vows to protect Hannah with every resource available to him -- and as a technomage in a high-tech world, his resources are almost endless...

EXCERPT

A loud, metallic click sounded from the other side of the room. Then footsteps raced around the couch.

"Hannah? Are you okay?" Ian's voice drew her gaze to his concerned face.

"What did you do? What are you?" She gulped, unsure if she wanted an answer to that.

He frowned, and a muscle clenched in his jaw. "I'm a technomage. I use and simulate magic through technology."

"What?" She pressed the back of her hand to her forehead. Pain formed at her temples. "Whoa. How long have you... ?"

"Since puberty. My mother was also a technomage." He shrugged a shoulder. "It's always been part of who I am. I'm just pretty good at hiding it."

She blinked. Wow, his mother had seemed so normal when she'd met his parents. Had she really known him? He seemed like a stranger. No, she wouldn't throw away their memories together because he'd hidden part of himself. She wouldn't do that to him. Or she'd try not to, at least. "Were you ever going to tell me? Like if things had progressed between us?"

He helped her up and grabbed the blanket, keeping her covered. "I would have, eventually. Wouldn't be nice of me to do otherwise, you know?"

She nodded and stared into his brown eyes. "I've missed you."

He released a breath and rested his forehead against hers. "I've missed you too. God, I really screwed things up, didn't I?"

Placing her hand against his chest, she angled her face to brush her lips against his. "We both did."

Ian ran his hand through her hair, cupping the back of her head before deepening the kiss. His mouth possessed hers like a thirsty man at a well. He always kissed hard and desperately, and she loved it.

Ian scooped her into his arms, making her feel desirable. He carried her into the bedroom and kicked the door shut. Crossing the room, he set her down and ran his hands over her neck, shoulders, and down to her hips.

"You're so beautiful, Hannah. I missed out on a lot when --"

"Hush. Don't think about that. We're together now." She drew his face down to hers, kissing him.

He held himself over her, obviously being careful of her wounded state. She appreciated that, but part of her didn't care about the injury, she just needed him.

He stiffened and glanced over his shoulder, looking at the door. She followed his gaze to see the gnome peeking inside.

"Sorry to disturb the party. As much as I'd like to listen to you two HAVE SEX, there's stuff to be done!" Bernard looked as happy as ever, and she so wanted to wipe that cheerfulness off his face.

Yet he was right. Damn it. She still needed to check out the donut shop. There was a possibility they might find evidence of a struggle that they could bring to the police. But hadn't she heard a couple weeks back about someone spreading rumors of police involvement with MAX Home Security? Ian rolled next to her and placed his hands over his face. He let out a ragged sigh. "Fine. We'll be out in a moment."

"No more SEX!" The gnome slammed the door behind him.

"Why do you put up with him?" she asked.

"I don't know. He tends to be okay. Most of the time, that is." He propped up on his elbow and ran a fingertip along her arm. "He's dangerous, though. Don't antagonize him. He causes suicide. That's what happened to his previous owner. I happened to be nearby, and Bernard started following me no matter what I did."

"How do you keep him from killing you?" Hannah frowned.

"I keep him happy enough. Besides, my power doesn't let him impact me much." He glanced back at the door. "Unfortunately, we need to get going before he bursts in here again."

She nodded and stared down at the quilt. "Would be easier if I had something to wear. I saw your living room floor; you cut my blouse off."

He sighed. "Right. Well, I can give you some sweatpants and a T-shirt. Guess we'll need to do some clothes shopping." Cocking an eyebrow at her, he smiled. "Not that I mind."

"Okay, what did you do to the Ian I know? You used to hate when I took you shopping." She grinned.

Ian shrugged. "I'm just glad to do stuff with you now. I'm not like I used to be." He glared at the door before glancing back at her. "Trust me."

"I do." She nodded. "With my life."

His lips thinned into a pink line. "I'm going to do everything I can to make you safe again. I swear." He caressed his thumb along her jaw line and brushed his lips against hers once more before getting out of bed.

SAVAGE BYTES
Hacked Investigations, Book 2

Private investigator Hannah Franklin has a new partner, her sizzling hot lover and technomage, Ian Bradley. But they may be in over their heads when brought in by their friend from the hospital to quietly solve a case that baffles even the police. The victims are being drained of blood and having their organs removed in a ritualistic fashion.

When Ian's attention narrows to solely encompass their work, he'll need to keep their relationship strong, or he could find himself repeating a painful past.

EXCERPT

Hannah Franklin froze in the doorway of Ian Bradley's weight room. Ian lay shirtless on the bench as he pressed the bar into the air over his muscular chest. With each rep he did, the muscles in his chest rippled deliciously. She licked her suddenly dry lips and cleared her throat.

His gaze caught hers, and he smiled. He rested the weight on the stand. "Hey, is everything okay?" He sat up and wiped his palms on his khaki cargo shorts.

"Yeah, we just received a call about a new case." She still found it hard to believe how many people had wanted to hire them after going against MAX Home Security. Sometimes, they actually had to turn people away. What a feeling.

Ian raised an eyebrow at her. "Tell me more. What is it about?"

"It's Leon. He wants to meet with us at St. Gregory's hospital in a little over an hour. He seemed pretty stressed." She leaned her shoulder against the doorframe, and a frown tugged at the corners of her lips.

Ian stood and then crossed the room to her. His hands cradled her neck, and he pulled her in for a warm kiss. His lips brushed hers, and she opened her mouth to him, allowing his tongue to stroke hers and fan the burning flames within her body.

Hannah gently pushed away after a moment. "I said we would be on our way." She raked her gaze over his firm, sweat-slick torso. "Besides, I think you need a break from working out."

Ian grinned and reached for his white towel. "I'll go hop in the shower real quick." He wiped off his face and hung the towel around his shoulders as he sauntered away.

Hannah's life had been a roller coaster after reuniting with Ian, her once ex-boyfriend. Now he was her partner in their private investigation company, Hacked Investigations, which specialized in technology-related crimes. The clientele so far had kept them busy, with common requests that involved backtracking various network intrusions to their point of origin and leaving the rest to the customers. Others required mundane tasks such as verifying the authenticity of gray-market implants and other upgrades not sold in broad daylight.

Up until recently, they'd been financially stable. The last two weeks had been slower, and their bills this month were a lot higher than expected. It didn't help that the silly gnome was as ravenous as ever.

She sighed and returned to Ian's small home office to retrieve her jacket. The weather outside was fine, but it could change so quickly, especially this time of year.

"Hey, if you're going out anyway, bring me back a bag of those chocolates I like! We can't all live on coffee, pasta, and CONDOMS, you know?" An obnoxious voice came from the kitchen before she had an opportunity to see the loud-mouthed gnome it belonged to.

"Nice to see you too, Bernard. Finished with the garden so soon?" Hannah forced a smile. "We're heading out to interview a client. Leon called, and we're going to see if we can help him," she said.

Bernard wore classic lederhosen and had a maniacal grin on his face. "Well, the garden can take care of itself for a while. So, why are you heading out to see that flamboyant rainbow-licking nurse? Unless, of course, he wants to trade make-up tips," Bernard said. A devious glint lit his eyes.

Hannah sighed. She could only take so much from the gnome today. Ignoring the other foul comments, she shrugged into her jacket and walked by him. Water sounded from the shower behind the bathroom door. She'd love to join Ian, but they'd be going nowhere fast if she did.

Instead, she sat in Ian's favorite recliner. A quick glance proved the gnome had vanished, giving her a moment's peace.

During their struggle against MAX Home Security, Leon had played a crucial role in getting past security guards and helping them talk with Senator Kendall, who cleared their names after the police had suspected them of attacking the senator. Leon lost his boyfriend, Rich Granger, due to MAX's overeager employee termination program, and he'd been more than willing to help them take MAX Home Security down.

The lack of background noise alerted her to the fact Ian was done in the shower and would be ready to go soon. She glanced in the mirror to reassure herself that she looked professional enough, and then she crossed the room to her safety box for her gun and a clip of ammo. The streets were more dangerous than ever now that MAX Home Security had restrictions placed on them by the legal system. Despite their corruption, MAX held low-level criminals under better control than what the police were capable of.

Ian entered the doorway, dressed in jeans and a polo shirt that revealed enough of his build to make her gaze linger over his toned body.

"Shall we?"

Old Myths and New Contexts
by Laura Bickle

I love turning old myths on their heads. In the Anya Kalinczyk series, I've had a lot of fun with salamanders. By day, Anya investigates suspicious fires as an arson investigator in Detroit. By night, she works as part of an eccentric group of ghost hunters. Anya's the rarest type of spiritual medium - a Lantern. Where other mediums allow spirits to use their hands and voices to communicate, Anya incinerates malicious ghosts. Her steadfast ally is Sparky, the fire salamander.

When he's taking a nap or disinterested in Anya's work, Sparky is housed in a salamander-shaped torque she wears around her neck. When he's feeling peevish, or in the presence of danger or ghosts, he's unleashed from the necklace. Most often, he takes the form of a five-foot speckled hellbender. He's prone to chewing on cell phones, shorting out fire alarm systems, blowing up microwaves, and wreaking havoc on nearly anything he can get his paws on. In SPARKS, he manages to get the fire department called on him at a baby superstore and sets off the sprinkler system at the crime lab while playing with a Bunsen burner.

And no, he doesn't have a leash. To give Anya some additional headaches, I let Sparky lay eggs in her bathtub. Fifty-one baby newts creating chaos.

I got the chance to play with a few other modern incarnations of myths in SPARKS. One of them is Charon, the ferryman from the river Styx. He's been reinvented as a psychopomp who haunts the county morgue.

In the following scene, Anya's taking all the salamanders to start a war in the Underworld with a malicious psychic who's been imprisoning ghosts. Anya's guide is Charon, and she's not very happy to be taking the trip.

EXCERPT FROM SPARKS - Anya Kalinczyk #2
by Laura Bickle:

Anya stared down into a hole that had been covered by the Dumpster. It reminded her of storm cellars in old houses: a stone frame and steps leading down into blackness. It occurred to her that this was the same spot that the basement had occupied in the footprint of the original building. But, somehow she doubted that she'd find an old store of office supplies and shelves full of dusty bottles in this place. Nothing was as it seemed on the astral plane, and she expected this would be no exception.

"How does this remain hidden?" Anya wondered if there was a truck that came by every week to pick up the astral Dumpster.

"It's an illusion. A bit of camouflage Hope's using to cover her tracks on this plane."

Charon descended the worn steps, and Anya followed. Sparky oozed down the stairs beside her, while the young salamanders leapt down the stone risers like Slinkies. There seemed to be no light in this place, but Sparky and the newts gave off a shifting amber glow that was sufficient to see by, casting writhing shadows on the earthen ceiling. Plant and tree roots reached down from the above as they descended down the broken spiral staircase. The place smelled like winter, like cold earth: sterile and barren, with nothing living.

She heard water, wrinkled her nose. "What's that? The sewer?"

Ahead, Charon shook his head. He didn't seem too need the light of the salamanders to see by; he walked down the uneven steps as if he'd known them well enough to wear the dents in the tops of the steps. "No. It's the Styx."

Anya's breath caught in her throat. The staircase spilled out onto a silty causeway, into the broken edges of a canal hewn into the stone. It was man-made; the arches curved as far as the meager light reached over the shallow black water.

"Are you sure it's the Styx? Because it looks like a sewer."

Charon sighed. "It's not _the_ Styx. Just a weak tributary. If you remember your mythology, it wrapped nine times around the perimeter of Hades."

"I thought we were going after Hope." Anya clenched her fists, trying to resist the urge to strangle the psychopomp's laconic throat.

"This is where she's retreated, at least on this plane. We've got to bring the fight to her." Charon began to pace beside the bank, kicking at pieces of trash: moldering newspapers, plastic cups, pop cans. The salamanders seemed to recoil from the water. Perhaps fire elementals didn't care much for the Styx. Given its dubious origins, Anya didn't blame them.

"Does she know we're coming?" Anya clunked to the water's edge. There was no way she could swim across in her armor. She ran her fingers along the seams. She had no idea if her astral self was wearing clothes under her armor, but she figured that death's ferryman had seen it all. She took her helmet off and set it in a clean patch of gravel by her feet. She began stripping off her gauntlets.

"Probably not. Not yet." Charon was piling up empty milk jugs and was counting caps in one hand. In the other, he was dragging a dented green plastic kiddie pool in the shape of a turtle.

He stared at her trying to open her breastplate. "What the hell are you doing?"

"Getting ready to swim across," she said matter-of-factly, though her cheeks burned.

Charon looked at her as if she was stupid. "Humans can't get into the water. This is the Styx."

"First of all, jackass, this is a sewer. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, and say it is, at best, a tributary of the Styx. Second of all, the Styx made Achilles invulnerable. And lastly, you seem to have survived it. So, kiss my ass."

Charon made a slicing gesture with the hand full of plastic caps. His expression was dark.

"You don't know the cost. All magick has a price, and the Styx is no exception. But, hey, if you want to walk around naked, don't let me stop you." Charon turned away and began fitting caps on the plastic pop bottles and milk jugs, but Anya thought she saw a spark of wry amusement in his expression. Just for an instant.

"So...how the hell am I getting across? Is there a bridge, somewhere?" Anya concentrated on wriggling her fingers back into her gauntlets.

Charon was tying the plastic bottles together with a piece of electrical cord, lashing them to the hard rim of the turtle pool. "If you would stop talking and stripping and doing other distracting things, you'd see that I'm working on that."

Anya gave him a sour look. At least he found the prospect of her nudity distracting. That was the only flicker of humanity she'd seen in him.

Charon turned his creation over. The kiddie pool resembled a warped artist's conception of a jellyfish, constructed of trash. Bottles of air were trapped under the rim, and Charon cast it in the water with a splash that made the salamanders scatter and hiss. The pool floated, tentacles of plastic and wire reaching out behind it.

"Here's your f---ing boat."

Anya stared at the makeshift craft. "Um, thanks."

Ebooks,Penumbra eMag, and so much More - Musa Publishing Opens its Electronic Doors

After months of editing, designing, contracting, and formatting Musa Publishing launches on October 1, 2011. The E-publisher opens with a large catalogue including Penumbra Speculative Fiction eMag, new works by three bestselling authors, and the full backlist of Aurora Regency, featuring traditional Regency romances and historical fiction.

Penumbra eMag

Penumbra's inaugural issue is a collection of speculative fiction stories that encompass the arts--the arts we love and revere. Some of these stories deal with the arts we're familiar with. Some create arts we haven't thought of and some resurrect arts buried in the depths of the past.  And yet, all of these offerings celebrate the creative process, which makes them a fitting theme to launch Penumbra--an enterprise that will showcase the creative work of speculative fiction authors each month with a new collection of works within the genre.
