Natalie J. Damschroder – The Inception of Under the Moon

I’ve been obsessed with passionate about two television shows in my life: Firefly, and Supernatural. A few years ago, I was dying to write a story with guys like Sam and Dean Winchester. But I didn’t know what.

I also wanted to write a story about a goddess, but I only had vague thoughts. Half a scene. No real plot. A chick-litty voice that wasn’t going to work, because I’m just not a chick-lit writer.

National Novel Writing Month was gearing up. We were only a couple of weeks away, and for years, my competitive spirit had wanted me to join in. But the rules of NaNoWriMo—mainly, that it had to be a brand new book you hadn’t started yet—had always kept me out of the game.

Then, two days before Halloween, it all slammed together. BAM. I had a goddess. She owned a bar in Ohio called Under the Moon, because that’s what her power source was. The moon. Her assistant was big and sweet, and antagonistic toward her protector, who traveled the country in his classic car, fulfilling a legacy of goddess protection that went back centuries. And, because I write romantic adventure, I had a bad guy: a leech, the worst predator of goddesses that could exist. That book poured out of me in 29 days, and it’s still my favorite book ever.

Under the Moon, Book 1 of Goddesses Rising
Entangled Publishing
Release date: November 1, 2011

Their power gives them strength…and makes them targets.

Quinn Caldwell is the epitome of a modern goddess. Her power source is the moon, her abilities restricted only by physical resources and lunar phase. She runs a consulting business and her father’s bar, serves on the board of the ancient Society for Goddess Education and Defense, and yearns for Nick Jarrett, professional goddess protector and the soul mate she can never have.

But someone has developed the rare and difficult ability to drain a goddess of her powers, and Quinn is a target. With the world thinking Nick has gone rogue (whatever that means) and that Quinn is influenced by “family ties” she didn’t know she had, keeping themselves safe while working to find the enemy proves harder each day.

But not as hard as denying their hearts…

Under the Moon will be available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Diesel eBooks, iTunes, and Books on Board.

Carolyn Brown - Red’s Hot Cowboy + Contest

From the Desk of Carolyn Brown!

Good mornin’ everyone!

It’s great to make a stop here on my blog tour for Red’s Hot Cowboy, the new cowboy romance book in the Spikes & Spurs series that hit the bookshelves this month.

Following on the coat tails of Love Drunk Cowboy which came out in May, Red’s Hot Cowboy is Pearl and Wil’s story. Wil is Rye’s best friend and Pearl was a child hood friend of Austin’s who y’all met in Love Drunk Cowboy. It was inevitable that they’d meet eventually after Pearl left her spike heels behind and started running the old vintage motel her Aunt bequeathed to her. But fate stepped in and they met a lot quicker than they might have at a holiday party or a Sunday dinner.

Isn’t that the way things often happen? Life gets in the way of the best laid plans. And talking about life, Pearl’s aunt’s favorite saying was: Life is faith, hope and chaos. Lean real heavy on that chaos and you’ve got Red’s Hot Cowboy!

Someone asked me if art imitates life, if any of my characters are based on people I really know and if I draw specific scenes from things that have really happened.

Answer: Yes, yes, and yes, ma’am!

Art is life. Without life in a picture, it’s flat and doesn’t appeal to the eye. Add light, whether it’s from the moon, the stars or the bright sunlight and the picture comes to life. Same with characters. Breathe some life into them and the reader begins to identify with them, to see quirks and mannerisms that make them three dimensional. Pearl has a temper and she’s pretty aggravated that Wil made a comment about her not being able to hold her liquor.

Despite what experts said, some small people could definitely hold their liquor better than big people. Aunt Katy said it had to do with the boobs. It all went in there before it hit the brain so Pearl could hold a hell of a lot more than it looked like she could.

“It is not a challenge. It is a fact. Don’t push it and you won’t get embarrassed.”

Wil chuckled. “It’s not a fact until it’s proven. You want to prove it?”

“Any time, cowboy!”

Does that give Pearl to life for you? Does it remind you of someone you know?

I get fan letters every week asking me if I knew Aunt So-and-so or if I’d met their cousin, Somebody, because one of my characters was that person all over again. And I’m so grateful that they know someone so real who reminds them of one of my characters. So yes, art imitates life!

Do I or have I ever based characters on people I really know or have known? Just like the front of the book says, they are all fictional. However, there was that swagger in a cowboy’s walk at McDonald’s out in the Texas panhandle that I used for Wil’s strut in Red’s Hot Cowboy. There was the way Maddie opened up her house for everyone on holidays like my momma did. And the way that Grandpa O’Malley wore overalls like my step dad used to. It’s adding those little bits of light that breathe life into a character and make him real.

There is no end to real things that become scenes or the idea for scenes in books. For instance, Wil is a proud cowboy who doesn’t like owing anyone. Even though his arrest is a case of mistaken identity, he wants to repay Pearl for taking the time to drive forty miles to give him an alibi and then giving him a ride home. How does a cowboy do that when she flat out refuses to go to dinner with him? Then I remembered one of the nicest things Husband (that’d be the man I’ve been married to too many years to count on my fingers and toes) ever did for me was clean the house while I got one more chapter written. So Wil helped clean rooms at the motel!

“You clean?” She asked.

“I have a house. Cleaning rooms couldn’t be that much different. You scrub the bathroom, vacuum the floor and do some dusting.”

“Why?”

“Because my house gets dirty.”

“No why are you here?”

“I don’t like to owe people. You won’t let me take you to dinner so I’m here to help clean rooms.”

She blinked three times and he didn’t disappear but surely she’d heard him wrong. Men did not offer to clean. In her experience it took an act of God to get them to pick up their dirty socks and actually put them inside the hamper instead of tossing them at it. And forget about them ever offering to scrub a bathroom. There was no way Wil had just offered to scrub bathrooms. Not with his looks and sex appeal. It wasn’t possible.

“So?” He asked impatiently.

“I’m thinking. Don’t rush me.”

“You really ought to hire some help. If you had a cleaning lady you could be catching a nap after that horrible night you just had.”

“I don’t need your advice but I will take your help.” What do you think? Does art imitate life? Does a hot cowboy romance remind you of someone you know or would like to know? Based on the two short excerpts, are you beginning to know Wil and Pearl? Would you like to get to know them better?

RED’S HOT COWBOY BY CAROLYN BROWN – IN STORES AUGUST 2011

He wasn’t looking for trouble…

But when the cops are knocking on your door, trouble’s definitely found you. And this is where Wil Marshal finds himself after checking into the Longhorn Inn. It could be all a big mistake, but Wil’s not getting much sleep. Then the motel owner—who is drop dead gorgeous and feisty to boot—saves him from an even worse night behind bars. Now he owes her one, bit time… But trouble comes in all shapes and sizes…

Pearl never wanted that run-down motel, but her aunt didn’t leave her much choice. And then this steaming hot cowboy shows up looking for a place to rest. Next thing she knows, she wants to offer him more than just room service. But if he calls her Red one more time, he won’t be the only one accused of murder…

Sparks are definitely flying and before long, the Do Not Disturb sign might be swinging from the door…

***Cheyenne McCray***

Hello, everyone!

I’m so glad to be here and to be able to share with you my latest release, Lipstick and Leather! Lipstick and Leather is three short sexy stories of mouth-watering cowboys and the women who lasso their hearts.

Here are the blurbs for the three stories:

Cowboy Up

Anna Landon doesn’t do long distance relationships and she doesn’t do cowboys. But when Mike McDaniel comes to her rescue again and again and again, she finds herself attracted to the tall, sexy cowboy more than she ever imagined.

Mike finds Anna intriguing. She’s nothing like the buckle bunnies who want nothing more than to snag a world champion bull rider. He doesn’t get into groupies and Anna is anything but. She’s a whole lot of woman rolled up into one sexy package.

Anna learns that Mike competes on the rodeo circuit and she knows that’s not for her. She doesn’t want a man who will be traveling so much, much less a bull rider who competes in one of the world’s most dangerous sports. Her heart couldn’t take it.

Mike knows he has some convincing to do but he’s determined to make Anna his own.

Rough Rider

Brianna Wilson knows a thing or two about business after running a successful Boston boutique. When she inherits her estranged father’s ranch she has some ideas of her own to get the failing ranch back in the black, and dives in with plan in hand.

Joe Carter never believed he could fall for a woman so fast until he finds Brianna sprawled out in a mud puddle. Problem is she comes charging into her role as boss, making decisions that could end up with every ranch hand quitting.

Brianna and Joe butt heads but she soon comes to realize there’s no controlling an Alpha male cowboy like Joe. She might be the boss, but in the bedroom he’s the one with the control.

Brianna has a lot to learn and Joe makes one great teacher.

Back in the Saddle

Susan Fairfield’s return from Dallas to the family ranch in Arizona is bittersweet. It’s been nine years since she’d fallen in love with Gray Reardon, when her dreams of happily ever afters had been crushed to dust.

Seeing Susan again stuns Gray. He’d fallen for her hard but she’d left without one word that would explain why she wouldn’t see him anymore. She’d broken his heart and he’s not about to go through that hell again.

But when Gray learns the truth, he’s determined that nothing come hell or high water will keep them part. Even when Susan insists that she has to go back to Dallas to run her family business, this time he’s not about to let her out of his life. Here’s a short excerpt just for you—

From Lipstick & Leather

Back in the Saddle

Susan caught her breath right before Gray’s mouth touched hers. His kiss was amazing. Everything she remembered and more.

His tongue met hers and she tasted his earthy male flavor. He smelled so good, of sun-warmed flesh and leather.

She fell into the kiss, got lost in the kiss. She wrapped her arms round his neck and drew him closer, tighter, feeling like she never wanted to let go.

So many times over the years her thoughts had turned to Gray but still she never returned. If she had, maybe he would be married to her instead of someone else.

He’s married, came the voice in her head. He has a wife.

It was a dash of cold reality that had her pushing him away instead of holding him tight. Gray drew away, a confused expression on his rugged features. “What’s wrong, Suze?”

“I can’t believe you kissed me.” She struggled to sit up straight but he wouldn’t let go. “You can’t kiss me. You’re married.”

A slow smile curved his lips. “Is that all?”

She frowned. “What do you mean ‘is that all’?”

“My ex-wife left me six months ago.” He stroked hair from her face. “It’s been a few weeks since our divorce was final. She’s a city girl. Big mistake thinking she could ever be happy in this country.”

“Oh.” Warmth started to spread through Susan as her heart leapt with excitement that he was free. She smiled and put her palm on his chest. “I’ve missed you so much.”

“That makes two of us.” He drew into his lap, settling her in his arms before bringing his mouth to hers.

His kiss was even more passionate. It was like all the years that had passed since that long ago summer were mere days. The love she had felt for him then had never left her heart and the fact that he was here, right now, and she was in his arms…nothing else in the world mattered.

She felt like a teenage girl again, the world filled with excitement and possibilities.

He drew back so that their gazes met. “Even as I moved on with my life, you were always there, a piece of you inside me.”

His words sent feelings of both happiness and regret through her. “I was afraid you would never forgive me.”

He brushed hair from her eyes. “I wish you would have given me the chance.”

“I wish I would have, too.”

“We can make up for it now,” he said before he kissed her again.

It was a forever kiss, one that lasted and lasted. One that touched her soul. It was so beautiful that tears gathered behind her eyes. A tear escaped and rolled down her cheek.

With a look of concern, he drew back. “Why are you crying?”

“It’s just so amazing being with you again,” she said softly. “That we’re here, together…it almost seems like it isn’t real.”

“It’s real.”

This time when he kissed her, passion rose within her and she felt the matching emotion in his kiss. Almost an urgency to it like they needed to make up for lost time.

Risk Taking 101
by Leanna Ellis

I am not a risk taker. Really, I’m a big wimp. If there is ever a show called “America’s Biggest Wimp,” then you’ll probably find me on it. When my sister played softball in college, I watched her risk life and limb to catch a ball or steal a base. When my brother played basketball in college, he took an elbow to the cheek without complaint. When I played sports, I went out of my way not to get hurt. If a ball came right at me, I ducked. I was really a dancer, and loved to twirl and tap and choreograph dances. I was creative. But a risk-taker? Not so much.

But twenty years ago, I was a teacher looking for a way out of the classroom. I often felt like a mouse in a maze, searching for that hidden piece of cheese, which to me was my ‘dream’. What was my dream? Dancing? I was too old to dance professionally and I also wasn’t talented enough. Having a dance studio put me right back where I was already: teaching. So what was I to do?

I read about others pursuing their dreams, but what was mine? My sister pointed out that I was always ‘scribbling away in that journal’ so maybe I should write. That was something I could get excited about. I loved books! My emphasis in teaching was a reading specialization. So in a way, my new dream combined my two passions: reading and writing. Plus, writing required creativity, which was what I loved about both teaching and dancing. But could I be a writer?

When I was a kid, I thought all writers were dead. I never dreamed I could write. What did I know about writing? Did I have something to say? To write? There were all sorts of excuses and reasons why I shouldn’t try to be a published author. Quitting my fairly secure job with a steady paycheck may not have been the smartest decision, except that I felt like I was losing my soul in the classroom. Teaching for the next thirty years seemed scarier to me than taking a leap into the unknown world of writing. And so I jumped out of the classroom and into writing. It became my passion, my obsession. I lived and breathed writing.

Do I regret it? Never. Has it been difficult? Of course. No journey worth anything is easy. All journeys are a struggle. But over the past twenty years, I have met some amazing folks, and I have published eighteen novels. And now, with two children, I am teaching them to pursue their passions.

My latest passion and obsession has been my latest release, Plain Fear: Forsaken. Forsaken actually began as a joke. I’m not kidding! I was at a multi-author book signing and another author and I made a joke about we should write an Amish/vampire story because those were the two genres that were selling so well. Well, it really was a joke. I didn’t rush home and start writing the book. But some seed was planted in my warped little brain and took root. Soon a character was speaking to me about her story and wanting me to write it. I resisted. Really, I didn’t want to take this kind of a risk by attempting to merge two very different genres. But there was a very intriguing element that I couldn’t seem to ignore. To me, this was a Phantom of the Opera type story, with a love triangle, and a clear dividing line between good and evil. The more I thought about this story and these characters the more passionate I became and the more obsessed I was in seeing it published.

Passion is one thing I could understand about my heroine, Hannah, a young Amish woman mourning the mysterious death of her beloved Jacob. She must decide between two brothers, between good and evil. When she learns her first love is now the vampire Akiva, she must forsake him and cling to a new love, a lasting love, one that will save her soul.

It can often be difficult to understand someone from a different culture, but I believe if you dig deep enough, deep into the heart, we are all the same. We have the same fears and doubts, passions and love. Hannah was passionate about Jacob, and that passion became her obsession, which placed her in a position that she must risk not only her life but also her very soul.

PLAIN FEAR: FORSAKEN BY LEANNA ELLIS – IN STORES AUGUST 2011

Not Death, But Love…

Pain choked off anymore words. She grabbed the cold stone marker for support, splayed her hands across its front as a sob wrenched free from her chest. Although she knows that the Amish way is to move on from grief, on to a new season, Hannah cannot move on from Jacob, who was taken too soon.

Jacob’s brother Levi also cannot move on—his love for Hannah burns just as strong as ever. But he knows how much Hannah loved his brother, and the event that took Jacob from them.

And it’s a secret he must take to his grave…

So when a mysterious stranger comes to their community, he too carries a secret; one that will force Hannah to choose between light and dark, between the one she wants to love and a new yearning she fears to embrace.

Lisa Kessler - Night Walker Excerpt + Contest

Enter to win a digital copy of Night Walker!

***
Hi everyone -

I'm excited to be on the Night Owl romance blog to share my new paranormal romance, Night Walker! Thanks for having me here.

One lucky commenter will win a digital copy of Night Walker!

Blurb:

He gave up his soul for a second chance to love her...

Two and a half centuries ago, Calisto Terana lost everything when a zealous priest murdered the woman he loved. Now, desperate for another chance to love her, he wants redemption for the mistake that cost her life.

She's haunted by dreams of her own death...

After catching her fiance with another woman, Kate Bradley returns to San Diego to clear her head. The last thing she needs is romance, but after meeting Calisto she's drawn to him in ways she doesn't understand.

They've waited in the shadows for centuries...

Calisto has no doubt Kate is the reincarnation of his lost love, but the Fraternidad Del Fuego Santo has a new watcher with dark ambitions of his own. As old enemies reemerge and a new threat arises, the betrayal that enslaved Calisto to the night might destroy the only woman he's ever loved again.

When I set out to write Night Walker, I wanted to write a book with an immortal vampire with a twist. I wanted him to live on the beach in San Diego. That didn't really fit with Bram Stoker's Transylvanian vampire lore, so I set out to create my own. I researched into the Kumeyaay tribes here in San Diego, and there interactions with the Spanish priests at the Mission de Alcala. Using local history, my paranormal world started to take shape.

Night Walker is the story of a man who loses his one true love violently, and how far he will go for another chance to see her again. Calisto has walked the earth, waiting for over 200 years to see her smile again. He's lost hope, his heart has grown cold and bitter, and yet, every year on Dia De Los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, he travels back to the Mission de Alcala in San Diego to leave flowers in her memory.

But tonight would be different. This is the night his path crosses with hers. He recognizes her instantly even though it's been over two hundred years since he looked into her eyes. He wants to touch her, but she has no conscious memory of him…

EXCERPT:

Kate watched them wander off before kneeling closer to the cross. Unable to stop herself, she traced her finger along the T in the center.

Behind her, someone cleared his throat. Kate jerked her hand away and shot to her feet. When she turned around she found a tall, dark-haired man staring at her.

Her cheeks flushed with heat. She hoped he hadn't witnessed her touching the relic. She waited for some kind of admonishment, but he didn't say anything. Not with words.

Something in his dark eyes captured her. His gaze wandered over her face like a tender caress, and strangely, instead of screaming for Lori and Edie, she caught herself imagining his touch on her skin. “I hope I did not frighten you,” he said.

His deep voice resonated through the empty courtyard, and the intimate tone weakened her knees. The hint of a Spanish accent didn't hurt, either. Nervous laughter escaped her before she could contain it.

Her face warmed all over again. “Just a little startled. I didn't see anyone else out here.” He stepped closer without encroaching on her personal space, his eyes locked with hers from beneath thick lashes. “Forgive me.”

She swallowed hard and prayed she wasn't blushing. “No problem.” She looked away before she embarrassed herself even further, focusing on the cross. “It's beautiful isn't it?”

“Si.” He nodded slowly. “Yes, it is.” His barely there smile made her think he wasn't referring to the flowers or the cross. “I am Calisto. Calisto Terana.”

Expectation hung as heavy as the scent of eucalyptus, as if he waited to hear something more than just her name.

“I'm Kate.” Instead of offering to shake his hand, she tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear. “It's nice to meet you.”

“The honor is mine, Kate... ” His accent colored the vowel in her name. It had never sounded more beautiful. She reminded herself to breathe.

When he hesitated for a moment waiting for her to speak, she realized she hadn't shared her last name as he had. She flipped through a rapid pro and con mental checklist, and decided it couldn't hurt. Maybe they would meet again.

“Bradley,” she said.

A sexy smile curved at the corners of his lips. “I hope this will not be our last meeting.” She glanced around the shadowed courtyard, feeling vulnerable, and almost gave in to her first instinct--to run. But she remembered her promise to herself. Be strong. Take action. She lifted her chin and said, “I guess you never know.”

With a smile that said he had every intention of seeing her again, he tipped his head. “Buenos noches, Kate Bradley.”

Her heart raced and her palms sweated when she realized he meant to leave. No man made her palms sweat. Ever.

His gaze held hers for a moment, full of unspoken promises she didn't understand. Without another word, he walked away.

***

The Old One's promise had finally come true. With his heightened vision, he had seen the lighter crescent of color in the lower corner of her iris. He recognized her in an instant. She had the moon in her eyes.

Tala, his love, lived again.

Her features were familiar, but not exactly as she had once been. Her skin was lighter now and the angle of her jaw softer, but her long black hair and her eyes had not changed. Hearing her voice, seeing her smile, brought back memories of a life they once shared.

The sound of her laughter was like a burst of sunlight in his endless night.

But Kate Bradley wasn't Tala. She had no memory of him. It was a bittersweet moment to see her face again, yet be unable to touch her. Although she didn't seem to fear him as a stranger, she also didn't recognize him as a lover.

He knew nothing about her life now.

The desire to touch her had overwhelmed him. He yearned to taste her lips and hold her in his arms. There would be time for that later, he promised himself.

It would have been simple to reach for her thoughts and learn her secrets, to become exactly the man she desired, but he denied himself the intrusion. He vowed not to use his preternatural power to entrance her or to listen to her private thoughts. He'd given up his mortality, his soul, for this moment, this second chance, and if she fell in love with him again, he needed to know it was real. No other person had ever touched his life like she had. Though she was no longer Tala, surely a piece of the soul he once loved lived inside of her.

Calisto walked into the shadows, wondering if she still sang with a voice that rivaled the angels. Would she dance with him in the waves of the Pacific as they had centuries before? He was anxious to find out. How long had it been since he'd been eager for anything?

A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. Kate Bradley.

He would see her again. Soon.

Viper Moon

Short EXCERPT:

The Barrows

July 21—Full Moon

Mama wanted me to be a veterinarian. She’d probably have settled for a nurse, teacher, or grocery store clerk. She never came right out and said, “Cassandra, you disappointed me” or “Cassandra, you have so much potential,” but I knew I’d let her down.

The idea of me running down a slimy storm sewer in the desolate, abandoned ruins of the Barrows section of Duivel, Missouri, probably never crossed her mind. The unconscious five-year-old boy strapped to my back and the angry monster with fangs and claws snapping at my heels were just part of my job. Maybe Mama was right—I’d made the wrong career choice.

I’m in good shape, but I’d run, crawled, and slogged through the sewer for over an hour. My chest heaved in the moldy, moisture-laden air by the time I finally reached my escape hatch. The glow from phosphorescent lichen gave me enough light to see the manhole shaft leading out of this little section of hell. Claws clattered right behind me and the tunnel echoed with slobbering grunts. This particular monster was an apelike brute with porcupine quills running down its spine and glowing green eyes.

Up into the manhole cylinder, two rungs, three . . . Roars bounced off the tight walls . . . Almost there—a claw snagged my slime-covered boot.

I jerked away and heaved myself out onto the deserted street.

Not good.

Clouds covered the full moon’s silver face, so my vile pursuer might actually take a chance and follow me. The Earth Mother has no power here in the Barrows save her daughter’s light in the midnight sky. Maiden, mother, and crone, signifying the progression of life from cradle to grave, that ancient pagan female entity had called me to her service years ago. Now, in her name, I ran for my life. In her name, I carried this innocent child away from evil.

The Huntress: Interview by Marie Alice for the Duivel Chronicle Sunday Special

I met Cassandra Archer in a small, grungy café on River Street and recorded this interview. A friend pointed her out to me. She’s an interesting looking woman, with brilliant red hair and hazel eyes. Tall, lean, she looks oddly attractive, and at the same time a little dangerous. I noticed that, though the restaurant was crowded, no one crowded her.

Marie: You’re a difficult person to find, Cassandra.

Cassandra: I don’t know about that. The bill collectors and police don’t seem to have any problem. And call me Cass. What do you want?

Marie: I writing an article for the Chronicle Sunday Special. Interesting occupations. I have a friend who works down by the docks. He heard about a Private Investigator called the Huntress.

Cassandra: Oh, that. Huntress is just a nick name. I spend a lot of time looking for kids. I wouldn’t call it interesting—except when something or someone is chasing me. That happens occasionally. And I’m not a P.I. anymore. Gave up my P.I. license so the cops would stop harassing me.

Marie: Why would the police harass you?

Cassandra: Jealous I guess. I find more kids than they do.

Marie: So, you find runaways?

Cassandra: Sometimes. Most of the time runaways are where they want to be. I can drag them out, kicking and screaming, but they usually go back. That’s teenagers. I look for the younger ones, kidnapped by a disgruntled parent. The Chronicle probably won’t print it for you, but sometimes, there’s a market down on River Street for the younger ones. Kiddie porn and stuff. Those are the ones I go for.

Marie: Are you successful?

Cassandra: Most of the time.

Marie: You must make a lot of money.

Cassandra: I don’t make any money at all.

Marie: Then why do it?

Cassandra: I serve the Earth Mother. She wants those kids saved for some reason. She doesn’t tell me why.

Marie: The Earth Mother?

Cassandra: The Earth Mother is the original. Humans worshiped her first.

Marie: You worship her? It’s a religious thing?

Cassandra: No, it’s a stupid thing. And I don’t worship. In fact, I don’t like the arrogant bitch at all. I just like saving kids. And kicking ass. I am not nice to people who hurt children.

Marie: Can you give me the names of some parents of kids you rescued. I’d like to talk to them.

Cassandra: No. I don’t ask names. The Mother says go fetch and I go.

Marie: So why should I believe you? If I can’t document, I can’t write it.

Cassandra: Hey, you asked. I answered. That’s all you get.

Marie: Where are you going?

Cassandra: I got to go see a man about a monster in the sewers.

Conclusion: I suspect my interview with Cassandra Archer is a bit of fantasy by an unstable woman and a total waste of a perfectly good afternoon.

Ashlyn Chase - How has writing changed my life?

How has writing changed my life?
by Ashlyn Chase

How has writing changed my life? I’m glad you asked. I feel so blessed, and it’s good to remember why sometimes.

In late 2000, my parents were both diagnosed with terminal illnesses—yes, at the same time. What is it they say? When it rains, it pours? Well, I was drowning. Being a registered nurse, and knowing my parents wanted to stay in their home as long as possible, I made some changes in my work schedule so I could take care of them with some help from a local Hospice. (I can’t say enough good things about the Hospice help I received.)

A fellow nurse where I worked at the American Red Cross Blood Donor Services saw my struggle and handed me a book. No, it wasn’t self-help. It was a romance novel.

“Here,” she said, as she shoved it into my hands, “Read this.”

She didn’t tell me anything about it, and I’m glad she didn’t. If I had known it was a romance novel, I’d have politely refused it. I’m ashamed to admit I was one of those snobs who hadn’t read a romance novel since the seventies and that one hit the wall.

What she’d given me was a life-line. The first book in Diana Gabeldon’s Outlander series—a very well-written healthy escape. I still didn’t realize I was reading a romance novel until I was well into the sequel! That’s how out of touch with the changing genre I was. When my parents were sleeping or being tended to by someone from Hospice, I devoured that book. As soon as I finished one, I began reading the next and the next until I’d exhausted the series. That’s when I discovered my local half-price bookstore. Rose, the owner, hand-picked novel after novel, learning my tastes and recommending books she knew I’d like. We became good friends.

In Feb and April of 2001, my parents passed away. Because I had already lost my sister and brother, I was alone—or would have been if not for my husband and daughter. Still, I felt like an orphan. Needing a break, I took a leave of absence from my job and took a part-time job in a garden center. Tending the plants while healing myself was exactly what I needed. During that time, I began to write for publication. (That’s the definition of a writer, by the way. Someone who’s not just messing around, but who is actively aiming to be published.)

I had already taken a screenwriting course at a nearby state college and learned the craft of storytelling. I realized breaking into Hollywood from the east coast would be difficult, if not impossible. That’s when I thought I might try my hand at writing a novel. The first book I wrote landed on a shelf in the back of my closet, but it was a good learning experience.

I figured I’d probably be best writing what I liked to read, so I monitored my reading taste for a while. That’s when I discovered I liked reading the “hot stuff.” When I stopped blushing, I took one of my screenplays and turned it into a steam-bath of a novel. I joined RWA, received a brutally honest critique (Thank you, Sylvie Kurtz!) and turned it into a sellable manuscript.

Here comes the weird part. On what would have been my mother’s birthday in 2004, I had a mental “chat” with her about my true ambition to write and publish romance novels. Suddenly, the idea of e-publishing popped into my mind. I had barely heard of e-publishing and knew nothing about it. I went about researching it like I do everything…with 100% of my focus and energy. Not long after that, I submitted my finished novel to three e-publishers. To my surprise, all three of them wanted it!

A few years later in 2007, my books were being published by the largest, most successful e-publisher and the largest publisher of erotic romance in the world. Fast forward another couple of years and I had sold a series to a publisher of mass market paperbacks. I scored a New York agent after needing one to help me interpret my fifteen page contract!

Books one and two in that series were a huge success. And now I’m celebrating the release of the third book in that trilogy. The Vampire Next Door is a light paranormal romance with steamy love scenes—my favorite genre to read and write. When my sense of humor returned, I knew I had fully recovered from the grief of the early 2000’s. Now I share my light-hearted voice with others in hopes of paying back what I was so generously given when I needed it most.

I’ve made dear friends all over the world. I have readers on five continents. I get fan mail, stellar reviews, and soak up every encouraging word. Yes, romance has changed my life. I’d go so far as to say it saved my life.

The Vampire Wore Sunscreen
by Mary Ellen Dennis

My name is Mary Ellen Dennis and I have 2 historical romances coming out this month. While my 1875 circus historical, THE GREATEST LOVE ON EARTH, has no paranormal elements, my 1890’s historical, THE LANDLORD’S BLACK-EYED DAUGHTER, includes two 13th-Century ghosts. Night Owl Reviews wrote: “This story is based on Alfred Noyes’s poem, The Highwayman but with a better ending. The author, Mary Ellen Dennis tried to stay historically accurate and stay as close as possible to the poem. She accomplished both.” And Publishers Weekly wrote: “Feisty author Elizabeth "Bess" Wyndham is inexplicably attracted to highwayman John Randolph Remington. From the moment he picks up one of Elizabeth's books, Rand is haunted by the story's uncanny similarity to his disturbing recurring dreams.”

Unraveling the mystique of those dreams is a recurring theme, and it leads to the possible betrayal of Rand, by Bess, during the novel’s exciting climax.

My BFF, who reminds me of Lucy in the Peanuts cartoon strip, told me I should write a book about vampires, rather than circus performers and highwaymen. That way, she said, I’d be rich and famous. Since I’d dearly love to be rich and famous, I told her I’d give it a try.

However, I’ve never met a vampire face-to-face. I knew I had some intense research to do and, somehow I didn’t think Google would fly. So I looked up Vampires in the Yellow Pages. It took 3 phone calls, after midnight, but I finally found one who was willing to talk to me.

Mary Ellen: Thank you so much for agreeing to meet me, Mr. … what do I call you?

Vampire: Rice. My name is Rice.

ME: Like, Anne Rice, who wrote Interview with a Vampire?

Vampire: Never heard of her. My name is Rex Rice, but most people just call me Rice.

ME: Okay, um, Rice. Thanks again. I really do appreciate it.

Vampire: You’re velcome. I’m glad you’re a redhead. I love the color red.

ME: Yes, well (glancing down at notes), where are you from?

Vamp: California. But I’m always looking for new locales. I visited Salem’s Lot, Maine, once. Didn’t like it.

ME: Whoa. Wait. You’re not from Transylvania?

Vamp: Never heard of the place.

ME: I’ve read about vampires, of course, and seen movies. But I had no idea you … they … looked so … well, normal. You could be the bachelor on one of those bachelor TV shows, especially with that chest. Do you wax it?

Vamp: I do.

ME: And your dimples are to die for. I mean, live for.

Vamp: Thank you. Out of curiosity, vhat do you write?

ME: Historical romances, but I was thinking about creating a vampire detective. Why are you shaking your head?

Vamp: It vouldn’t vork, unless he vorked the night shift. Or if he only vorked on cloudy days. Maybe if he lived in a Lincoln Continental. With tinted windows.

ME: How about a vampire cop?

Vamp: Same problem.

ME: I see your point. No offense. I mean, your fangs and all … your, um, pointy teeth.

Vamp: Freudian slip. Happens all the time.

ME: How about sunscreen? Maybe I could concoct a special, secret, government sunscreen, a la Dean Koontz.

Vamp: Sunscreen might vork, or maybe Mime makeup. If a Mime fell in the forest, would anyone know? (laughs) Do you have a title for your story?

ME: I was thinking of calling it ‘The Vampire Wore Prada,’ but now I’m thinking ‘The Lincoln Vampire’ might fly.

Vamp: Yes.

ME: Yes, vhat? I mean, what?

Vamp: I thought you were asking if I could fly. The answer is yes.

ME: That’s good to know. It could be an important plot element. Do you change into a bat, first?

Vamp: You’ve been vatching too much TV. Or too many Bela Lugosi movies. Vy vould I vant to be a bat? All that guano. Ick.

ME: Sorry. I don’t usually stereotype. So, no detective protagonist and no cop. What, exactly would you like to be?

Vamp: Your perp.

ME: Perp? How do you know that word?

Vamp: Vhat? You think vampires can’t read? Some of my best friends are librarians. If this were television, I’d say UNSUB.

Mary Ellen: If you were my perp, er, UNSUB, er, villain, who … whom would you kill? I mean, who would you bite?

Vampire: Stephen King.

Anyone in the market for a story called THE VAMPIRE WORE SUNSCREEN?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

She is married to novelist Gordon Aalborg (aka Victoria Gordon), whom she met online through a writer's group; they live on Vancouver Island. She has two books in stores this month, released by Sourcebooks Casablanca: The Greatest Love on Earth—set in the exotic world of a 19th century circus and sweeps readers into death-defying feats, dangerous rivalries, and a love that has all the thrills and romance of the greatest show on earth., and a reissue of The Landlord’s Black-Eyed Daughter: A fast-paced and passionate retelling of the story of two timeless lovers who would die for each other. How I Fell in Love with My Hero
by Kathryne Kennedy

Thank you so much for having me here today. It’s such a pleasure to talk with your readers once again! My publisher will be giving away two copies of my latest release, THE LADY OF THE STORM, to a couple of lucky commenters today (U.S. & Canada mailing addresses only), and I’m looking forward to responding to the comments!

When I first visualized the alternate world of THE ELVEN LORDS, I really wanted to fall in love with my half-breed heroes. Their half-elven nature not only gave them magical powers, but often gifted them with beauty, grace and strength. But their elven lord fathers that broke the barrier between worlds to conquer England were considered mad by their own people, for they lusted for war and chaos. And had evil, unfeeling hearts.

My half-breeds had the gift of a human heart, although it often had to be hidden beneath a cold exterior because of the world they had been born in to. In THE LADY OF THE STORM, Giles Beaumont is one of those half-breeds. A man bent on vengeance, who carries a cursed sword that lusts for blood, he is forced to fight in a war not of his own making. And I had to balance that harsh exterior with enough vulnerability to fall in love with him:

Screams of fury and agony surrounded him. The sharp scent of blood filled his nostrils. Betimes a red haze covered his eyes until he could barely see. Battle was not all he had dreamed of. The reality of it twisted is gut, brought a bitter taste to his mouth. Giles’s blade hummed with happiness while he regretted the death of each man he killed, trying not to think of the widows he created today.

It was easy to visualize his physical appearance, and although that may be the least of his strong attributes, it made it easy to fall in love with him:

She looked into his face.

Merciful heavens. Cecily stroked his thick white hair off his brow. The pale strands lacked the sparkle of

silver that marked the elven lords, but it only made him appear more human. Made his beauty more real. The sculpted cheekbones, the perfectly formed nose and chin. His skin also lacked the paleness attributed to the pure elven—a light golden color that, along with his ordinary-shaped eyes, betrayed his more-human blood.

But he’d inherited entirely too much of the elven beauty for any woman to be unaffected by the mere

sight of him.

His habit of protecting my heroine, Cecily, made it easy to fall in love with him. Even before he’d realized that his desire to protect her stemmed from love, he could not allow her to come to harm, even when he had to put aside his own ambitions to continue to keep her safe, whether she needed his help or not:

Her legs wobbled. Giles curved his arms about her back and held her upright. Her hair smelled of lavender and country air, the fine strands of it tickling the underside of his chin. She felt so small that a wave of fierce possessiveness struck him, an urge to protect her, to keep her safe, despite the dangerous power he knew she could wield. Power that made her more than capable of protecting herself.

If he didn’t let her go soon, he might never. “Can you stand now?”

I hope you fall in love with Giles just as hard as I did. Are there certain attributes in a hero that make it easy for you to fall in love with him? I look forward to hearing about them!

My Magical Best,

Kathryne

The World of Sports and Romance
by L. Anne Carrington

In a world of books where readers search for something different, a new question has risen: can sports and romance blend?

Kristal McKerrigton, author of the acclaimed Freedom is Earned, Shetland’s Immortals: Against My First Love and the wrestling-based A Different Life YA romance series (all from XoXo Publishing) and I are in the process of forming ideas for a live discussion panel, with wrestling and romance as the main topic during the 2010 RT Book Lovers Convention in Chicago, IL.

There’s much that can be done with blending both romance, wrestling and other sports. Though such a concept isn’t attempted often in the written word, one fine example is Kate Rigby’s novella Break Point (SINAP, 2006). Despite its inclusion in the gay/lesbian genre, the book focuses around the world of tennis.

My first novel The Cruiserweight (Night Publishing, 2010) and its upcoming sequel, Kerrigan's Legacy, contain blends of wrestling and romance. Parts of The Cruiserweight can be described as “racy,” but it also contains plenty of wrestling-based settings.

Panels which represent sports-based romance at conventions would open doors for both authors and readers of aforementioned genres. All that is needed is convincing convention and other book event organizers that presenting such panels could benefit not only sports/romance authors and readers, but also both genres as a whole.

Wrestling-based romance would attract a new group of readers to conventions and book events while helping boost sales. In addition, both would draw attention from the yet-untapped MMA and newly developed wrestling fiction worlds if concepts of sports and romance were discussed more often.

Many writers fear stepping outside of their comfort zones; however, things can be done to create a bridge between the romance and sports markets. While I’m sure there aren’t many male romance readers (at least openly), more sports-based novels could draw in both genders – the rough action on the field/court/in the ring, etc. for males, and the softer romance side for women. There is a real future for ground breaking work to be done that will inspire not just sports fans, but other romance writers who wish to expand into new areas and stand out away from the saturated market of vampire novels.

Isn’t it time for more writers to tread new waters?

EXCERPT: Kerrigan's Legacy, upcoming sequel to The Cruiserweight:

Chapter 1

"I'm going to kill that girl." Ka

ren expressed disgust and disappointment as she read the letter from her daughter's college, which informed her and Brett that Autumn had withdrawn from school. "Why did she do such a thing, and worse, why didn't she discuss this with Brett and me? All those years he worked so hard to save money so she could go to a nice school, and now it's for nothing." She put the letter aside and pinched the bridge of her nose. Autumn Skye Kerringan, you better have a damn good explanation for this.

The front door slammed, followed by footsteps approaching in the hallway. "Hey, Ma, I'm home!"

"In here, honey." Karen took a deep breath and composed herself.

Seventeen-year-old Bubba entered the living room. Like Brett, he sensed when something was wrong, even though she tried to put on a front for her son's sake. "What's going on? Something happen to Dad?"

"No, he's okay, as far as I know."

"Then what is it? I don't like that look on your face."

"Don't say anything to your father when he comes home, but we got a letter saying Autumn withdrew from college."

"What? Dad's always stressed about us getting an education, and all we heard Autumn talk about from the day she'd gotten her acceptance letter was going to college, and then taking wrestling training after she got a degree. Any reason why she quit?"

Karen shook her head. "No. We'll have to find out when your sister decides to visit."

"Yeah."

"Get on it. You need to improve that chemistry grade if you're going to get into a decent college."

"Can I just drop chemistry? It's not like I'm going to use it when I'm a writer." "There's a lot of subjects we have to study, even if most of them aren't used when we go out into the world. You're going to need a second skill to fall back on in case writing doesn't work out. It's important to take a variety of courses, whether you like them or not. Look at it this way, at least you aren't required to take Home Economics like I was."

Karen pointed toward the stairway. "Go do your homework. Dad will be home soon, and I need to have a talk with him."

Hi Readers,

Tammie here to introduce you to a wonderful paranormal erotic romance series. I read the first book in the "Sister of the Moon" series last year and was hooked. Since then I've been checking every so often to see if book two was out or when it was slated to arrive. Recently I finely found some info that it was due out  on Aug. 8th - YAY. Now with book two coming I wanted to share that with you all. The author Billi Jean was kind enough to give us an excerpt to share with you all. Please do get book one first before starting into book two. Book one is titled "Midnight Star". Book two "Silver's Chance". You can find details on these books as well as purchase links at: http://www.nightowlromance.com/nor/Authors/Billi-Jean.aspx

BLURB: SILVER'S CHANCE

When life throws Samantha a curve ball in the form of an ancient Lykae warlord bent on marking her as his – what’s she going to do? Run like hell? Oh, yeah, that so worked the first time around. With Derrick hot after her tail, Samantha discovers being the hunted just might not be as bad as she thought.

Derrick is a warlord hardened by centuries of battle. Now that he’s free from years of torment, he discovers his mate. Only his beautiful little half wolf is as determined to deny him, as he is to claim her.

As the battle to keep her safe intensifies, Derrick faces the biggest fight of his life: winning Samantha’s heart and keeping alive long enough to claim her.

Together they just might tame each other.

EXCERPT: SILVER'S CHANCE

Derrick inhaled the intoxicating blend of sweetness and spice from the small, beautiful female facing him. Standing as if poised for flight, she was still more beautiful than the freedom she'd given him. Her sweet scent reminded him of something, something spiced with brown sugar and cinnamon out of his past. She would become his future. His. His to claim. His to have. She belonged to him. With him. Her sweetness filtered through every cell in his body imparting essential parts of her to him.

Her pink, soft lips parted. The wariness she'd displayed since he first saw the blue of her eyes intensified in her gaze. She feared him.

The idea gave him pause. Confusion mixed with possessiveness pounded through his wrecked body and mind. His wolf paced, eager for her. The animal recognized its mate and demanded she do the same. Here. Now. Derrick firmed his control, until he felt the pressure to take, mark, to claim recede into a dull sense of wariness.

Slowly, very slowly he loosened his hold on her slender forearm.

She broke the light hold immediately and took a cautious step backward as if anticipating his coming after her. She looked ready to leave, much as she had before. Or mayhap she wanted to fight him. Both options were impossible.

He shook his head to clear it, feeling heat rise up the back of his neck. He needed to appear calm. Shaking his head like a wolf wouldn't earn her trust. As he watched her expressive face, he tried to figure out how he'd upset her. He'd snarled at her. Yelled when she'd ripped the bolts free. Everything else had been a blur of scents, sounds, images, filtered through his wolf and his own panic at the thought of losing her.

Whatever he'd done, he had to remember to exert more control over himself. She didn't appear too confident in his leash on his wolf. He needed to reassure her.

"Thank ye for aiding me . . . ." He paused, hoping she would supply her name.

After several deep breaths, she cleared her throat. Her blue eyes flickered over him under her dark, delicate brows, and she nodded.

"Samantha."

Samantha. A beautiful name. Her voice made him wonder what she would sound like when he claimed her. At the thought, his cock surged, dulling the pain of his wounds. After so long without any stirring, the swelling of his cock made him lightheaded. Slowly, realization sank in. He was free. He stood near his mate. His cock pounded with life. What more could he want?

Samantha eyed him warily, reminding him she might have freed him, but he was far from free to claim her.

"We should think of leaving soon. I sense danger still. Should I try to heal, uh, the damage?" She inspected him like he was a green recruit, not a warlord.

As well she should. Shame deadened his body. He had dreamed of her for years, and now she'd not only found him, but freed him from bonds he'd been unable to break —until her.

"Nay, I will heal verra quickly. Ye ken?"

She seemed to worry over his words, but before he could assure her further, she nodded absently and shifted her gaze to the cavernous hall, then quickly back to him again. She spoke differently than anyone he'd heard before. Fast, clipped, odd phrases fell from her pink lips too quickly for him to follow.

Or mayhap he spoke too roughly. It'd been years since he'd walked his home grounds. Even before his capture, he'd not been home in ages. He spoke several languages, and yet her English sounded foreign to him. If he had to guess by her slight pauses after he spoke, his words were just as unclear.

"This place, it's deserted, right?"

He nodded. This he understood perfectly. He wanted to reassure her, so he spoke slowly, choosing his words with care. "Aye, for a verra long time, this place has been deserted."

She nodded as he spoke, clearly put at ease. He sensed something else as well. Disappointment, mayhap? Had she wanted others to be here?

He remembered when the cavernous hall had echoed with evil. He thanked whatever god had led her to find him now rather than when Death Stalkers filled the halls. The years of torture rose up painfully in his mind, as if by thinking on them they took root and grew.

Samantha took a step back from him. Instantly, she gained his full attention, and the painful memories blew away like leaves in a gale.

Blue eyes, eerie they were so blue, met his steadily, her anxiousness clearly lessening as space separated them.

His chest tightened. His wolf paced. Perhaps she sensed his tenuous control. Shame heated his neck. After years of dreaming of her, he met her this way, when he could barely hold himself back from making her his. The instinct to claim roared to life at the thought of her soft, delicate flesh cradling him. He wanted closeness, comfort, and ease after years of loneliness. Proof she wasn't a dream.

"So, look, we'd best go—" She paused, giving him a questioning glance.

"Derrick, ma name is Derrick."

She nodded slowly.

His words had been too hasty, rushed. He'd slow down, and mayhap she would as well.

"My name is Derrick."

"Yeah, got that the first time. So, how long have you been down here?"

He fought the urge to grin. She didn't slow her speech, yet he understood her better than before. What to say? He'd been held for so long, he couldn't remember. Instead of answering, he reached up and rubbed a hand over his neck, the slice of pain in his damaged shoulder further proof this was not a dream. How long? He'd long since lost count of the years. What was the point? When the Death Stalkers had first tricked him, using a female child as bait, he'd fought to the death. They'd captured him with a sleeping potion delivered by a dart to the back of his neck. When he'd woken, he'd found himself in hell. Years of torture and torment followed. They'd meant to break him, force him to take the dark vows, and join their ranks. He never had. After endless years of torture, they'd seemingly grown bored with him and left him to rot, bolted to this cavern wall, alone and full of misery and regrets. Even now, he feared the woman before him was merely a trick. A dream.

"Hello? Earth to Derrick? I asked how long you've been here."

Startled out of his thoughts, he focused. Obviously, she was real. More real than he'd ever dared to dream. But now, standing before him, one hand out, rolling it in a motion meant to hurry him up, she surprised him with her boldness. He reached out to take her hand. She immediately scurried back, a frown pulling her brows together in a signal not to touch her. It stung. Hurt.

"Decades, mayhap longer, Samantha." He let her name roll from his tongue, wanting to say it again and again, but she gave him her little frown as if he'd fucked up again. He stared at her, unable to take her determined expression seriously. Her faced enchanted him. Heart-shaped, with bright, intelligent eyes under her black, winged brows, a slim, perfect nose and soft, pink lips, she struck him as some small, delicate, Faye princess. But most assuredly not in need of rescuing. A smile tugged at his lips, unfamiliar after so long, but welcome. She'd rescued him, hadn't she?

Her skin was like cream, silky white against the multitude of raven twists and complicated braids weaving the long midnight tresses away from her face. Dressed in a snug, black leather corset laced tightly over high, firm breasts, and matching leather trousers, she looked both fierce and sexy. The way her curvy, little body fit into the sinful leather was indecent. He experienced a shot of jealousy at the idea of any male seeing her dressed in such clothing. He wouldn't mind her wearing these sexy things in their home—hell, he'd beg her to—but where others could spy her lush curves and fantasize over the valley between her full breasts? No' a chance.

"Mmm, decades." Still eyeing him cautiously, she blew out a breath. "We need to shift out of here. If you're sure you don't need me to attempt a healing . . . ?"

Her blue eyes traced over the shoulder he'd ripped open. In concern? Or irritation? "I heal verra quickly. We should leave now."

"Then we'd best hit it. It'll be nightfall soon. I can shift us up to my jeep, and we can go from there."

"Shift?" This worried him. He didn't worry over her leaving him. Now he had his freedom even if she left him, he'd find her—no matter where. But this witchy gift made his hackles stand on end. Yet, without her, could he have torn himself free? It had taken her magic to free him. Or the threat of her leaving, he reminded himself.

Clearly impatient with him, she gave a sexy toss of her head and blew wisps of hair off her face.

Did she know how fetching her little gesture was?

"Yes, shift. Have you shifted before?"

"Dae ye come here alone? Dae ye keen evil once lived in this place?" He attempted to keep the censure out of his tone, but his voice sounded rough and demanding.

Hand anchored on a hip, she turned her blue gaze up to meet his with a look of utter annoyance. "Yes, I came here alone. Why would I endanger my friends?"

Anger broke the surface of his already-chaotic emotions. Did she not realize the danger she put herself in by being here?

He took a step toward her. Twin blades of silver appeared in her hands. Cool steel kissed his neck. Amazed, but more amused, he still frowned down at her, warning her with a low-toned growl. Mates did not harm mates.

"Watch it, beastie boy. Now, do you want to go? Or do you want to stay?"

Amusement won over anger. Even his wolf wanted to play. "I will go. Dae ye wish to take me in parts? Or whole?"

"Please. Just try not to beast out. You're a big wolf, all right? It's not easy shifting that much . . . ." She exhaled loudly and muttered, "Bulk," under her breath. She gave him a measuring look, hesitating at his hips. When her gaze caught there, he felt his body harden to steel for her. She jerked her gaze back up to his face, narrowing her eyes with obvious suspicion, as if he'd caused his erection to show off.

"I will keep my bulk. All of it, if ye dinna mind. I will have need of it, thank ye." Soon he wanted to add, but her body language spoke louder and more understandably than her words not to push.

"Huh, yeah, well, just try to keep it down, 'kay?"

Suddenly, a thought occurred to him. "Will it harm ye to shift me?"

She gave an offended snort for his concern.

He curled his lips.

"Just hold on, and try to keep the beast down."

Susan's Latest Title: ONLY MINE, HQN Books, contemporary romance, July 26, 2011.

You can't win if you don't play...

Her town's lack of men may make headlines, but it isn't news to Dakota Hendrix. The beautiful blonde has bigger problems to deal with, such as overseeing the romance reality competition filming in Fool's Gold. Screening eligible bachelors is a difficult enough task, but Dakota hits an unexpected snag when a sexy stranger comes to town.

Finn Anderssen will do anything to keep his twin brothers— the perfect contestants— off the show. Despite Dakota's better judgment, she finds herself drawn to the mysterious outsider. Like her, Finn knows about heartbreak and how a family can fall apart, so she doesn't dare to hope for anything more than a fling. After all, even in the Land of Happy Endings, finding true love is never as easy as it looks on TV.

Hi Susan,

Thanks for joining us today. Please tell us your latest news!

My latest news is a return to Fool’s Gold, California, the setting of my ongoing series of romance novels. ONLY MINE was released on July 26, and ONLY YOURS and ONLY HIS will be released over the coming two months. One after the other, the Hendrix triplets will fall in love. And their mom, Denise, gets a little romance in her life, too, after ten years of being widowed. You can read a free excerpt of ONLY MINE at www.susanmallery.com/excerpts.php.

Please describe your writing environment.

I write in a cozy office with big windows that give me a view of Seattle streets. People watching sometimes distracts me. Every morning, my dog comes with me to work. I sit in my ergonomic chair, and she lies down on the mountain of pillows that befits her status as a true princess. Her adorableness sometimes distracts me. I have a fabulous desk that I had made this past year, with drawers for my files and a thousand nooks for everything else. The wood grain is soooooo pretty, it sometimes distracts me. (Yes, I’m easily distracted, especially when I hit a plot snag.)

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

I had always loved reading, but it wasn’t until I was in college, taking a night school class called “How to Write a Romance Novel” that I realized that writing could be a valid career path for a girl from Burbank. I had always assumed that writers had to lead fabulous, exciting lives. Which we do, but interestingly, our exciting lives happen primarily in our imaginations. Our real lives are filled with grocery shopping and picking up after the dog. Not so glamorous, but the mix keeps me entertained.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

If you truly want to succeed as a published writer, then my best advice is to never give up. Keep writing, keep learning, keep submitting until you find an editor who loves your voice. Don’t get stuck on one project, either. Finish it, learn from it, and move on to the next. Every new book you write has the potential to become your first sale.

What main genre do you write in?

Romance

Do you like to mix genres?

I love writing romance. These days, I also write one non-romance, women’s fiction per year, which gives me the opportunity to dig into some of the other relationships that mean so much to women.

What book are you reading now? What are your thoughts on it?

I’m reading HOW TO SEDUCE A BILLIONAIRE, a Harlequin Desire from author Kate Carlisle. It’s terrific! Brandon Duke is the billionaire in question, and the book starts out with him being completely flummoxed by his secretary’s sexy makeover. Kate tells the story with her trademark humor. (She also writes a fun series of mystery novels called the Bibliophile Mysteries.)

What inspires your writing?

I find inspiration everywhere, but especially from stories on National Public Radio. I can’t express the depth of my love for NPR. You learn the most interesting things on their programs, and you never know how this jumble of disparate facts might come together to form a fabulous story. The Fool’s Gold series was inspired by a story about the 2010 census, which hadn’t happened at that point. They were talking about all the interesting things that towns can discover about themselves, and I started to wonder what was the most embarrassing thing the census might reveal about a town… and I thought, “What if there weren’t enough men?” Thus, the town with the man shortage was born.

Do you have any cool promo tricks you can share with other writers?

Scheduled tweets are fabulous and handy. Most of the time, when you see me post something on Twitter, I’m there live. But I do schedule promo tweets the day a book is released, to make sure that I touch base with my Twitter followers.

Do you have any animals? Do they influence your writing?

I have a tiny but intrepid toy poodle named Nikki. She’s six pounds of pure love. She inspired a super sweet service dog who plays an integral role in ONLY YOURS, my September release.

If you had to choose one person to have dinner with, who would it be? And why?

I would love to have dinner with Tim Gunn of Project Runway. He seems like a genuinely nice man. He’s sophisticated, educated, and still warmly accepting of everyone he meets. Also, I think there would be a lot of other very interesting people at a Tim Gunn dinner party, and the conversation would be sparkling.

Thank you so much for hosting me here today! Please visit me online at www.susanmallery.com or www.facebook.com/susanmallery!

Glad to have you

Tammie King
