On Having Adventures by Doranna Durgin

About Having adventures: Do That.

You know you want to!

More than that…if you write, then your characters want you to, too.

There's a thing about adventures: They bleed over to the page. (With luck they don't also literally bleed, but you never know.) Adventures in travel enlarge your world and perspective; adventures in emotion do the same. Adventure in activity enlarge not only your knowledge base, but your foundation for interpreting everything else.

For me, I've mostly had adventures in remote areas and with animals. That time in the log cabin (shared willingly with the black snake, not so willingly with other creatures) gave me a perspective on a different time of life. Later, down off the mountain and into the bottom of a back holler in southeastern Kentucky, I found myself rubbing elbows with a fading generation of people who were truly still pioneers--and when I headed over to visit my elderly neighbors, I not only got a glimpse of life as it was a century earlier, I saw that life still in action.

Adventure, you might think? That was just me, living my life.

Just so.

The time I spent living in minimal circumstances, a summer in a tent and in the elements, taught me what it feels like that moment you realize nature is so much bigger than you are. Not the birds and bunnies or the horses I was caring for, but the wild, atypical thunderstorms of that year--circling our little valley to strike again and again and again. I learned what it felt like to dive repeatedly for cover (pointlessly, of course) as lightning struck within reach, or to shiver in my tent at night with the sound of trees falling around me and not knowing if the next one would land all too close.

Adventure? That was just me, in my summer between college years.

Just so.

With the riding, the adventures include days of riding out at dawn in thick, wondrous fog, getting caught out in deep darkness in unfamiliar mountain territory, handling a runaway in overgrown woods, inadvertently spurting out over the edge of a mountain and riding it down…

That was just me, on the horse of the moment.

But that's the whole point. Whatever your life is about, there are adventures. Maybe some more exciting than others (hey, go for it!), but if you absorb them, whatever they are, they can inform your writing.

Because it's not like I've ever actually done the things my characters do. I mean…seriously, look at what I write: fantasy or action-based romance or paranormal romance! But still.

When Garrie faces ethereal energies unlike anything she's imagined before, I can draw on what I've absorbed to make her world real--and that means digging down deep and re-experiencing the awed terror of those endlessly raging thunderstorms and microbursts, waiting for that tree to fall or that lightning strike. It means Immersing myself in those feelings, and the awe of understanding how much bigger the world is than I…how much more powerful.

When Trevarr moves with the protective ferocity of his nature, then I think about that moment I went over the side of the mountain on horseback, and what it took to ride that through. I channel me to become him.

When Trevarr's bond-partner Sklayne shifts from his not-cat body to his more flexible self, zipping along power lines and crunching down bugs, then I…

No…no. I got nothin'. I make that stuff up.

Really, it's all about tapping the adventure--regardless of how big or small, or whether it was actually labeled as "adventure" at the time. It's about taking personal experiences and bringing the deepest and the most affecting aspects of them into the written word so that the written word comes alive. It's just life.

Just so.

STORM OF RECKONING by Doranna Durgin is now available from Tor Paranormal

Lisa "Garrie" McGarrity is young woman once mentored by a ghost who now leads a ghostbuster team--all of whom are recently entangled with Trevarr, a fiercely driven demon-hunter from a different dimension. After tumultuous adventures in San Jose, the team finds themselves much changed and struggling to adjust, while Trevarr returns to this world--and to Garrie--a battered exile.

But Garrie and her team don't head for home; Quinn Rossiter has a lady friend in Sedona who needs their help. There, in that area of power convergence, Garrie is astonished to find the ethereal breezes quiet, the earth's activity so diminished as to be nonexistent...if you don't count those oddball surges that don't taste like our world at all. Soon enough, Quinn's skeptical friend soon goes missing...soon enough, their efforts to contain the situation go amazingly awry.

With Trevarr wary and alert, his opinionated not-cat bond partner dropping dire hints of trouble on their trail, Sedona ghosts rising to act out against Garrie wherever she goes, and one living Keharian ethereal breeze detector gone completely amuck and on the loose, she has only just so much time to figure out what's going on before the power plays are too much even for this one-of-a-kind reckoner and her otherworldly partner.

The Secrets Of Internet Dating

My work in progress involves the use of such online dating sites so I signed onto a few to see what all the hullabaloo is about. Seems many give membership free to women, the men pay. Some are free for both sexes, in some both pay. The common denominator seems to be the freedom and anonymity the Internet allows.

Now I can not speak from the male perspective, though I have asked a number of men about their experiences, but for women I have found men quite forward and often more familiar than most would ever dream of being in ‘real’ life. There is a presumed intimacy that does not as of yet exist. Many assume women are there for a quick sexual hookup or to show up naked on cam. Men tell me they get many scam approaches from girls wanting them to pay for cam peeks so the problem evidently goes both ways.

However--I am equally surprised at the number of men looking (or claiming to look) for their soul mate. Men claiming to want to form serious relationships are numerous.

The vast wasteland is in that place anywhere in between. If you are a woman, that leaves you with either wanting NSA sex or wanting a husband. What ever happened to getting to know the person behind the image? Maybe make a friend. Every relationship with the opposite sex does not have to be sexual/intimate. Yes, men are visual creatures and are attracted to a pretty face. Heck we gals like a man easy on the eyes as well. What about the person behind that profile photo? Most potential dates approach you like a two dimensional photograph.

Messages are filled with cut and paste tales of past betrayals and the desire to have someone 'real'. There is little tit for tat in this realm, most men opening line being nothing deeper than “What up”, “Hey”, or “Add Me”. Does the Internet really lend itself to 'real', though?

Like looking through the phone book, one tires of the vast array of choices, easily succumbing to a catalogue effect. Yet how is a woman or man going to find someone real if he/she is unwilling to even read the profile of the other? One out of a hundred seems to take the time to read even the few sentence introduction left in the 'About Me" section. They ask things that are either clearly stated or disallowed in that section.

And then there are the inevitable scammers. Often originating in third world/African countries, they pose as American men on business overseas. They are most often ‘widowers’ with a child living with a mother or dear granny back home. (Eliciting sympathy) and/or their parents were killed when they were young. They try to ingratiate themselves leading to asking for help with transferring money or outright pleas for cash. You seldom get that at the church social!

Whether ‘real’ or ‘virtual’ dating, the point most important to remember-- each person is an individual that deserves respect. A reply is always proper even if it is to say thanks but no thanks. Sincere interest in the other and attempts to get to know what makes the soul on the other end of the email tick are a great beginning. Laundry lists of what you want are quickly seen as ‘me,me,me’ shallow. Hey, What Up. Add Me or Nudge, Nudge are not great sales pitches when sent solo as first contact. It’s amazing how even words alone can communicate the essence of the person on the other end. I have found that those men who do take time to actually show interest through communication have as individual a personality as any met face to face—all comes through with a turn of phrase or line of questioning. The protection of Internet anonymity can likewise lead to more in depth conversations than may be possible when the other person is a local. Cultural and paradigm differences are not only fascinating, but eye opening.

Meeting in a public locale, if there is to be a first face to face, is a must of course. Safety is more important than ever in this ‘virtual’ world.

At the end of the day it is human nature that does not change. We all want to be approached as a unique individual, not a number or a face.

The Green Eyed Monster

Everyone feels jealousy from time to time. It’s a natural animalistic reaction we have that wants to cry out, “Mine!” Being jealous is not easy to deal with. We’ve all done crazy things because of it: Driving by someone’s house to see if their home, act possessively causing a fight, or get depressed and empty the freezer of all the ice cream.

When someone gets caught in a three way relationship jealousy happens, as my heroine and her two heros find out. Relationships are hard with just two people. Adding a third makes it seem impossible.

The momentum of Tane shoving me off his chest as Rurik came into the room sent me bouncing on the covers. I flinched, expecting pain to tear through me, yet nothing happened.

“I was healing her.” Tane sounded as if he’d been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. I had to admit it looked bad. He only wore track pants and I wore nothing except my birthday suit, but come on, it was Tane. We could barely stand each other and on top of it, he was gay.

Rurik slammed the tray of food he carried onto a nearby coffee table. The plate rattled and the drink slopped over the edge of the glass. “You had to wait until I left and sneak in here like a rat?” He crossed the room and shoved the Nosferatu against the wall.

Tane didn’t fight back. He allowed Rurik to push him. The Master of all vampires could turn my lover inside out if he wanted to, however he did not deflect Rurik’s fury. He diverted his gaze to the floor as if he couldn’t meet his friend’s glare. His head bounced off the wall as Rurik shoved him again with more homicidal force.

“How could you betray me like this?” Rurik shouted in Tane’s face. “It’s not enough you steal her bond, you need to seduce her as well?”

Excerpt from Catch

But jealousy is not the same thing as love. Sometimes people think feeling envious means they are loving their partner a lot or more. It’s really the fear or anger of losing out that is the root cause of this painful emotion. If jealousy is leading to power struggles in a relationship there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

The moment we turned the corner toward our room, I swung around to face him. “Please, tell me you’re not angry.”

“For finding you in Tane’s arms again? I’m not furious but...” He shrugged and tried to get around me, yet didn’t put much effort into it since I stopped him with my hand.

“I had another nightmare of Luckard. Tane thought it best to shield my sleep in case that monster was trying to get into my head.”

“And I was unavailable to help you.” He stared over my head, not meeting my gaze. A muscle ticked along his clenched jaw. “Useless again.”

Wrapping my arms around his slim waist, I pulled us together. “You make me feel loved.”

“And he makes you feel safe.”

My head cranked back to look him in the eye. “What makes you say that?”

“I don’t need to read your mind. Your face is an open book. You didn’t hurry to me after waking as you would have a few days ago.”

“I was--”

“Comfortable.” He finished my sentence then touched my curls. “I love it when your hair gets crazy like this.”

A wellspring of doubt bubbled from my heart and it made me sad.

Excerpt from Catch The green eyed monster can be slain through compassion, communication, and caring. These are hard lessons to learn and understand. Witness it in Catch.

Blurb:

Caught between two vampires, Connie is torn between Rurik, the one she loves and Tane, the one she’d love to stake.

Hunger burns in Connie Bences’ soul--she craves the blood of her vampire lover, Rurik, but it’s not satisfying her needs anymore. It’s driving her insane. Desperate to find help, Rurik brings her to Rio De Janeiro, where Tane rules the vampire nation.

The back-stabbing vampire almost killed her and Rurik when they’d first met, then used them to obtain his crown. She would rather stake him, but the small drop of Nosferatu blood he’d forced her to drink in Budapest is blooming into a bond, one which ties her life to his. One he won’t hesitate to manipulate.

He admits to binding her so Rurik would have to remain at his side, but their timing couldn’t be any worse. The betrayer finds himself betrayed. Tane’s rule is in upheaval and he’s forced to place his trust in two people who owe him no allegiance--her and Rurik. In the middle of a power struggle, Connie fights to keep her lover, but didn’t plan on Tane slipping into her heart.

Passion – More Than Steamy Glances

This being Valentine’s Day, it is not only easy, but expected for our thoughts to turn to passion. (Cue the lacy lingerie, sultry jazz music and a few flickering candles.) Romance readers and writers are big fans of this particular word because it carries such promise with it. While it can indicate a strong amorous feeling, love or sexual desire (all great things in a romance book!), passion can also be an extravagant fondness for anything.

In my book Act Like We’re In Love, Luke’s a big time movie star, and Linnea is a regional theatre actress. The wrong kind of sparks fly when they meet, and aside from lusting after Luke’s drool inducing body (thanks to his years of portraying AquaMan), Linnea wants nothing to do with him. Until…they sing together while rehearsing for Guys & Dolls.

She sank back into her seat and gripped the edges with her fingers to keep from throwing herself into his arms. The way their voices had melded was incredibly sensual. Every note Luke sang caressed her body with its velvety tone. The experience qualified as the closest she’d come to sex in many months. For that matter, it was better than the last time she’d had sex!

Linnea develops respect for Luke; for his dedication to their craft and his utter devotion to making their production as stellar as possible. Their shared passion for performing helps bridge the gulf between them (okay, the hot kisses on the river bank probably helped as well).

Characters can share a passion for something tangible like antique cars to a favorite baseball team, or something more ephemeral like justice or revenge. Passion can lead to a cute first meeting at an indie film festival. Two long-time adversaries might be brought together through their passion for restoring a historic landmark. On the other hand, passion can drive a wedge between characters, creating the all important conflict that tears the hero and heroine apart. She passionately wants kids – he doesn’t. He wants to spend his life avenging the libelous scandal that got his father kicked out of Congress. She wants her passionate love for him to be enough, and for him to abandon the unwinnable cause he pursues so passionately. Are you sensing a theme here?

Passion in all its forms is at the heart of every romance. Great passion can lead to great tension, great love, and of course, great sex. What’s your passion (besides reading romances)?

Paranormal Appeal

I love paranormal romance novels and have ever since they were so rare that I had to wait months between new releases . . . not by one particular author but by ANY author. And, judging by the explosion in popularity the genre has undergone in recent years, I’m not alone. So what is behind the paranormal appeal?

There’s the obvious, of course: the fascination inspired by the notion of immortality, having incredible strength and speed and -- depending on the paranormal being -- possessing abilities humans lack (teleportation, accelerated healing, telekinesis, precognition, telepathy and more). But I believe there is far more to the popularity of the genre than that.

In many paranormal romances, ordinary people are taken out of their element or outright yanked from their comfort zone. Their eyes are opened to a whole new world that has always existed around them, unseen or unacknowledged, mentioned only in fairy- and campfire tales. And common criminals are child’s play compared to the threats posed in these preternatural worlds. How will the human, more often than not the heroine, react? Will she balk? Will she dig in her heels and resist? Will she rise to the occasion? To what extraordinary lengths will she go to survive and to protect those she loves? Will she elect to remain in this new world? Or find it too dangerous and difficult to bear?

What else in paranormal romances appeals to readers? Happily ever after in the immortal world takes on a whole new meaning. It doesn’t last decades. It lasts centuries. Millennia even. Outside this fictional realm, we live in a society in which television commercials advocate infidelity and most forms of the media (movies, music, television, etc.) mock falling in love and make spending the rest of one’s mortal life, which is considerably shorter than an immortal’s, with one person seem downright torturous. So, I find the concept of a couple being thrown together and, throughout the course of the trials they face, falling so deeply in love that they will happily commit to each other for centuries very appealing and suspect others do, too.

Paranormal romances also, like the horror and sci-fi genres, allow readers to escape the stresses of daily life into a fantasy world where good triumphs over evil, usually in a big way, taking readers on a wild ride that has its own happy ending. The fact that those who fight on the side of good, whether willingly or reluctantly, are as flawed and imperfect as those of us in the real world makes the win all the sweeter. And the edgier paranormal romances provide a taste of the dark, dangerous and forbidden from a safe forum, giving readers the same excitement and adrenaline rush that lures devoted horror fans to movie theaters.

All of these characteristics -- ordinary people taken out of their element and doing extraordinary things as they rise to the occasion, embrace eternal love, and travel dark, dangerous paths to triumph over evil -- feature prominently in Darkness Dawns, the first book in my Immortal Guardians paranormal romance series. I hope you’ll enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Darkness Dawns - Cover Blurb

In this dazzling, sensual novel, Dianne Duvall beckons readers into a world of vampires, immortals, and humans with extraordinary gifts . . . where passion can last forever, if you're willing to pay the price . . .

Once, Sarah Bingham’s biggest challenge was making her students pay attention in class. Now, after rescuing a wounded stranger, she’s landed in the middle of a battle between corrupt vampires and powerful immortals who also need blood to survive. Roland Warbrook is the most compelling man Sarah has ever laid hands on. But his desire for her is mingled with a hunger he can barely control . . .

In his nine centuries of immortal existence, no woman has tempted Roland as much as Sarah. But asking her to love him is impossible -- when it mean forfeiting the world she’s always known, and the life he would do anything to protect.

Question: What appeals to you the most in the paranormal romance genre?

Love Triangles, Quadrangles and Other Messes

Love is complicated, awkward and never seems to arrive respecting anyone's schedule. But rather than love being a disreputable houseguest we try to dodge at our doorstep, love is sought out and embraced by most of us with foolish abandon.

That's the way love is in the 13 to Life series. It's a mess. Readers know that things are complicated between Jessie, Pietr and Sarah. Jessie and Pietr aren't a "love at first sight" sort of couple. Although I may have my romantic moments and leanings, I couldn't write a love at first sight story. It doesn't ring true to me. Lust at first sight? Sure. But love? Real love takes far more than a single glance to be established. So my characters (and their emotions) are complicated from the beginning.

Falling in love really isn't what Jessie had planned for her junior year in high school. Dealing with the aftermath of a tragic car crash? Unfortunately yes. Trying to do what her mother would have wanted her to do? Regardless of how it hurts her--yes. Keeping her grades up and her friendships as stable as possible? Yes. But love? Not even on her radar. Sure, she's been crushing on a guy for a while, but let's be frank, crushes are a far cry from the bonding that comes with love.

So, when love walks in carrying plenty of his own baggage (and being hunted by some truly dangerous types) things get difficult.

Then add in a little good-old-fashioned teenage angst. Who can't remember what it was like to be a teen and in love? Talk about awkward and complicated and--well--passionate. Two girls after the same guy and one girl wants to do the right thing but tends to fall into martyr mode. Hey, she's young. So one girl hands over the thing she wants most. Sort of.

Yes, love's complicated.

And authors occasionally get crucified for writing love triangles or, as emerges in Secrets and Shadows (out 2/15/11) something even more difficult. And distinctly dangerous. Because if love is complicated and awkard for us normal folks, imagine how rough it is when it involves werewolves and other paranormal entities.

Setting As Inspiration by Laurie London

Many authors are able to recall what inspired or sparked the ideas for their books. It could be a dream, a movie, an overheard conversation, a television show, a magazine article, a news story, a piece of art or a photograph. They get their ideas from observing life around them and interpreting them in different ways.

My inspiration often comes from my environment and how it makes me feel, therefore, setting is a very important element in my stories.

The idea for the opening scene in BONDED BY BLOOD, book one of the Sweetblood series, came as I drove past an old cemetery near where I live. For some reason, I double-backed around, pulled off the road, and got out of my car.

Tucked beneath a stand of fir trees at the side of a busy highway, it seemed glaringly out of place. It really belonged out in the middle of nowhere, at the end of an unused gravel road, where the headstones could crumble without the drone of the modern-day world whizzing by.

For me, cemeteries conjure up feelings of sadness, loss, death, loneliness and old memories. They can be quiet places—peaceful and reflective (when my kids were little, I’d let them play among the headstones when I visited my grandmother’s grave), or they can be mysterious, foreboding and terrifying.

But that day as I walked through the tiny cemetery, I also thought of vampires, compulsion and fear.

I decided to explore all of these emotions in the opening scene of BONDED BY BLOOD. Mackenzie Foster-Shaw is a movie location scout, looking for a place to film a zombie picture. If the production company picks her locations and decides to film in Seattle, she’ll get a much needed bonus. It’s expensive supporting a mother who has Alzheimer’s disease and a younger brother in college.

However, Mackenzie lives with the fear that someday the Shaw family curse will catch up with her. Unbeknownst to her, she is a sweetblood—as are many of her relatives—a human with a rare blood type that’s addictive to vampires. For years, members of her family have disappeared randomly, including her father when she was a child. Even though most disappearances have occurred in big cities, she has no idea if she suffers from this curse or not, so she lives day by day and has learned how to protect herself.

In the For Readers section of my website, I posted a few photos of that cemetery near my home. While Mackenzie hopes that Hollywood will envision zombies rising from their graves here, she has no idea what awaits for her just beyond the trees.

When you look at the photos, can you imagine a vampire hiding beneath some of the leaves, waiting for night to come?

I can.

JOSEPH CAMPBELL: Mythology For The Modern Reader

When was the last time a book REALLY resonated with you? The book that, rather than end up in last summer's yard sale, is actually rubber-banded together because you've literally read it to pieces but can't find a replacement copy? The one you can recite entire passages from? The one you recommend to everyone and their cousin?

What makes that book so special? So powerful? Have you ever stopped to think about where the magic comes from? How the author pulled character and theme and emotion and drama all together?

For me, I grew up with epic fantasy and sci fi - from reading CS Lewis and Tolkien to watching Star Wars. It wasn't until I got older that I realized they had a common thread - a scholar/teacher named Joseph Campbell. The eminent mythology expert of the 20th & 21st centuries. The man who made it his life's work to study universal themes, what all cultures' storytelling and mythology have in common. Why people are still drawn, over and over, to the good defeats evil, David beats Goliath, the good guy always gets the girl and they live happily-ever-after? There's so much chaos and negativity in the world that it's great to be able to curl up with a tale and know the good guys are gonna win. “And they lived happily ever after. THE END.”

What do you look for in a story? Great characters you can identify with? Believable problems and solutions? Exotic locations? Grand adventures? Tales that weave emotion through every page, where you laugh and cry and worry and wonder along with the characters? See it this pattern looks familiar:

Little hero/ine in a sucky spot, wants things to change

Little hero/ine thinks, “What can I do? It's too big for me.”

The last straw breaks the camel's back and little hero/ine thinks “enough already” and off s/he goes to change things

Meets their ideal hero/ine, sparks fly

Various adventure, mayhem and disasters ensue, with betrayal and death and rescues and lessons learned

Hero & heroine fall in love, but it will never work (see above various & sundry complications)

Black moment when all hope seems lost

Wondrous solving of the problem, characters personal growth and triumphant return

The happily ever after

THE END

The above template is my variation of “The Hero's Journey” by Joseph Campbell, the Holy Grail of storytelling. It's a wondrous journey, an adventure, an escape, with fabulously real lands, weird food, bad weather, horrific villains with evil plans, the occasional noble death, brave and sassy heroines, and smoking hot heroes. Any combination of the above. Anything goes!

The magic's in the journey - and the triumph in the end.

Ever cheer at the end of a movie? Every hug a book you just finished reading? Ever write an author to say, “This book changed me/my life?”

Ever frantically search for a rubber band to keep from losing one single page of the third copy of your favorite book? (Okay, for me that book is Barbara Hambly's “The Ladies of Mandrigyn” from Del Rey, 1984, ISBN 0345309197)

So, I cut my teeth on epic fantasy - Tolkien and Terry Brooks and LOTR and Willow. As a writer, I now have my award-winning “Guardians of Light” fantasy romance series for Samhain. Reviewers have taken notice. I hope you'll check it out.

My heroines? A half-dragon fire mage, an assassin nun, a selkie/single mother, and a dream faerie.

My heroes? Elven princes and paladins and spirit healers. The odd werewolf or two.

My villains? Demons and genocidal queens, power-mad dragons and selkie princes, and goblin sorcerers.

We also have the odd tree sprite, gypsies, an occasional mermaid, talking horses and sentient jewelry. Chaos and mayhem aplenty, with the occasional head-on-a-pike. Noble death and self-sacrifice. Always the good-wins-out-over-evil AND they-lived-happily-ever-after.

“Lycan Tides” is currently a 2011 EPIC Finalist for Fantasy Romance.

My newest title is “Dust of Dreams.” It features a dream faerie and elven spirit healer pitted against a goblin sorcerer as they try to free a goblin child from nightmares-become-real. The underlying theme is tolerance and compassion. As one character explains to another when describing the heroine, “Pryseis didn't see goblin. She saw child.”
