Cooking Up Characters
by Joanne Kennedy

Creating characters for a novel is like following your great-grandma’s handwritten recipe. You take a pinch of this and a dash of that, and when you’re done you have something unique you could never recreate with quite the same spice.

Lacey Bradford, the heroine of Tall, Dark and Cowboy, was cooked up out of a number of people who made an impression on me. Some of her quirks come from a lady I worked with years ago, and she talks like another friend of mine. But her looks, her heart, and her smile come from a woman I don’t even know. I saw her in a coffee shop. I’m a shameless eavesdropper, and I couldn’t help listening to her conversation with a friend. She seemed sassy and vulnerable all at once. She was beautiful, but surprisingly unsure of herself.

I wondered what life experience would make a woman such a walking contradiction, and that became the seed of Lacey’s story. I decided she was a rich girl who was good at making people love her, but not very good at loving herself. She looked like a winner, but she didn’t have much in the way of survival skills. Men had always taken care of her, and she didn’t really know how to take care of herself.

I wanted to put her in a book, but the stories I stuck her in were like baggy sweaters—she could get into them all right but they just didn’t fit. They sagged at the edges and stretched at the seams, and in the end they just weren’t right for her. But even when she was just hanging out half-formed in my mind, she was stubborn and determined. She wasn’t going away until I figured out where she belonged and what she needed to do to complete herself.

Finally, I gave up and told her to get lost. I put her in a beat-up car and sent her off into the sunset all by herself. And that’s when Lacey came to life. She was running from something—I didn’t know what yet—but she couldn’t quite leave everything behind. Lacey is a homebody at heart, so she hunted down the one piece of her hometown that was missing and ran to him.

“Him” is Chase Caldwell. He’s another character who needed a story.

Chase turned up in my imagination sitting behind a cracked Formica counter at a small-town car lot. He was clearly a real cowboy, so what was he doing riding a desk chair instead of a horse?

As it turned out, Chase had left Lacey’s Tennessee hometown when his family lost their land. He took off for Wyoming, determined to start over as a rancher. It’s not easy to start a ranch from scratch, so Chase runs a car in town until he can revitalize the only piece of played-out land he could afford.
Of all the people that could turn up in Grady, Lacey is the last one Chase wants to see. Not only did she break his heart, but her ex-husband conned his father out of his family farm. So Lacey’s the reason he’s stuck behind that formica counter, struggling to rebuild his life.

Once the two of them met, I had no problem finding their story. She and Chase were meant for each other, but they both had a long way to go before they were ready for love. And they needed a lot of help along the way—help they found from each other, and from the people of Grady, Wyoming.

So next time you’re at a coffee shop, keep this in mind: You never know when some author will hijack your looks, your style, your voice and your mannerisms, match you up with a studly cowboy, and send you riding off into the sunset to live happily ever after.

If only that could happen in real life!

Did you ever meet someone you thought belonged in a story? Is there someone in your life that belongs in a book? Tell me about the most interesting person you’ve ever met.

Tall, Dark and Cowboy by Joanne Kennedy—In Stores November 2011

She’s looking for an old friend…

In the wake of a nasty divorce, Lacey Bradford heads for Wyoming where she’s sure her old friend will take her in. But her high school pal Chase Caldwell is no longer the gangly boy who would follow her anywhere. For one thing, he’s now incredibly buff and handsome, but that’s not all that’s changed…
What she finds is one hot cowboy…

Chase has been through tough times and is less than thrilled to see the girl who once broke his heart. But try as he might to resist her, while Lacey’s putting her life back together, he’s finding new ways to be part of it.

Thanks for hosting me on Night Owl today! I'll be stopping by now and then to check the comments and see what kind of interesting "characters" you've run across in your own life!

November 17, 2011 9:18 AM

OMG can't wait to read this one! books with hot cowboys are my favorite!!
I WISH!! -----> You never know when some author will hijack your looks, your style, your voice and your mannerisms, match you up with a studly cowboy, and send you riding off into the sunset to live happily ever after. I'd love to find a studly cowboy in real life! lol

Hey Joanne! Great post. I love hearing how other authors deal with characters that just won't be content taking a back seat but need that special story to come alive in. :)

Lacey and Chase sound like a great combination! Congrats on releasing your latest!

November 17, 2011 9:30 AM

Hi Joanne! Great post. Love a pinch of this and a pinch of that! That's truly the recipe for one of your fantabulous cowboy books!

November 17, 2011 9:58 AM

Joanne, I have four sisters and at one time or another they have all been in my books. The funny thing is they never recognize themselves!

Deborah, thanks for stopping by! I'll try to find you a hottie...in the meantime, you can borrow Chase for a while:)

Colleen, congrats to you, too, on your own hot cowboys, "Tyler" and "Dylan." They are obviously not the kind of guys who take a back seat--unless there's a woman back there!

Thanks, Carolyn. I want to pinch your cowboys too:)

Amelia, it's probably a good thing that nobody recognizes themselves in my books! That's why I always try to take the looks of one person and the personality of another.

Thanks to all you Sourcebooks ladies for stopping by!

Hi Joanne! Love the notion of comparing character building to putting together a recipe... no two people will come out with quite the same results!! Congrats on your latest book for us to enjoy. :)

Characters really make the book for me. Your characters sound great. I look forward to reading more. Thanks for visiting.

Cathy, thanks! From what I hear, you've cooked up some yummy ones.

LSU, I agree that characters make the book. When we remember books we love, it's the characters we think of, not the plot. I always try to make mine feel like real people to the reader.

Tall, Dark and Cowboy sounds like a fantastic story. I love the setting of a small town in Wyoming, and I can't wait to read all about Lacey and Chase.

Love the post, I guess the most interesting person I know or have met is my best friend's nephew. He backpacked in Europe after high school, it was interesting to hear the stories, and then he worked as a tour guide in Asia, and after getting injured he came back home, and while attendng school here near home, he had a major accident and his life was in jeopardy then he worked on a cruise ship where he met and married another interesting person from Eastern or Central Eastern Europe, and the adventure continues.
Fascinating, and so much more brave and curious than I could ever be.

My husband is a ham and would be a great character in a story!

Sounds like a great read, but how can the book be anything but with cowboys??!! LOL!

I love your descriptions of how you tried to put the character into different books but it didn't fit. It's magic when you find what really works!

November 17, 2011 8:59 PM

I've met a few people that I think should be in books, so I can see that they get their comeuppance. LOL There is a friend of mine that is so quick with the snappy, quirky comebacks that I thought it would be great to see her likeness in a book. I always think of a comeback way to late;-)
Can;t wait to read this book. Thanks for the giveaway. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Wow- this book looks so good! I absolutely love the "second chance at love" theme, and these characters sound like they'd be fun to read about. I can't wait to get this one into my hands! :)
Actually, I've been toying with the idea of basing a character in a YA book loosely around the personality of my own daughter. I like your idea of choosing the personality traits of one person, but the description of another so that they don't "recognize" themselves.
Congratulations on your new book, Joanne! I'm sure it's going to be a hit!

Hey, you had me with Tall, Dark, & Cowboy! Congrats on the new release!!!

November 18, 2011 7:18 AM

Joanne, I think you could write about the feeding habits of marmots and I'd scarf it up. You know exactly the detail to present that brings the setting to life, and makes a subtle comment on the characters in the scene too. I don't think this skill can be taught--but it can certainly be appreciated when it shows up on the page.

And as for interesting people... I find if I know to whom I'm dedicating a book, that person's story often informs the book at the level of theme, and so far, all my books are dedicated at least in part to family.

I would have to say that my best friend Jamie is the most interesting person I've ever met. I never know what's going to come out of her mouth, and she never reacts the way you'd expect someone to react in all situations.
Thanks for the contest, looking forward to reading Lacey and Chase's story!
