Natalie J. Damschroder – The Inception of Under the Moon

I’ve been obsessed with passionate about two television shows in my life: Firefly, and Supernatural. A few years ago, I was dying to write a story with guys like Sam and Dean Winchester. But I didn’t know what.

I also wanted to write a story about a goddess, but I only had vague thoughts. Half a scene. No real plot. A chick-litty voice that wasn’t going to work, because I’m just not a chick-lit writer.

National Novel Writing Month was gearing up. We were only a couple of weeks away, and for years, my competitive spirit had wanted me to join in. But the rules of NaNoWriMo—mainly, that it had to be a brand new book you hadn’t started yet—had always kept me out of the game.

Then, two days before Halloween, it all slammed together. BAM. I had a goddess. She owned a bar in Ohio called Under the Moon, because that’s what her power source was. The moon. Her assistant was big and sweet, and antagonistic toward her protector, who traveled the country in his classic car, fulfilling a legacy of goddess protection that went back centuries. And, because I write romantic adventure, I had a bad guy: a leech, the worst predator of goddesses that could exist. That book poured out of me in 29 days, and it’s still my favorite book ever.

Under the Moon, Book 1 of Goddesses Rising
Entangled Publishing
Release date: November 1, 2011

Their power gives them strength…and makes them targets.

Quinn Caldwell is the epitome of a modern goddess. Her power source is the moon, her abilities restricted only by physical resources and lunar phase. She runs a consulting business and her father’s bar, serves on the board of the ancient Society for Goddess Education and Defense, and yearns for Nick Jarrett, professional goddess protector and the soul mate she can never have.

But someone has developed the rare and difficult ability to drain a goddess of her powers, and Quinn is a target. With the world thinking Nick has gone rogue (whatever that means) and that Quinn is influenced by “family ties” she didn’t know she had, keeping themselves safe while working to find the enemy proves harder each day.

But not as hard as denying their hearts…

Under the Moon will be available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Diesel eBooks, iTunes, and Books on Board.

Artemis- Goddess of the hunt. I think that would be soooo fun. Perfect accuracy in shooting anything.

Oooh, I like that one, Emily! I've always loved the elegance of archery.

I think the ability to appear anywhere without having to travel would be cool, too. :)

Hey, everyone, my day job is kicking my butt today, and I won't be able to get back to the computer until this evening. But I WILL be back to read and respond to all your comments! Good luck!

August 30, 2011 4:53 AM

I'm not a big paranormal reader, Natalie, but I love the premise of UNDER THE MOON! The blurb totally hooked me.

As far as my goddess powers? Hmm. I love the travel idea since it's so expensive and I don't get to do it as much as I'd like (you know, all the time). I also think it would be awesome to be able to fly, which might help with the whole travel thing...

Hi everyone,

Thanks for dropping by and leaving comments.

I think that Aphrodite and Artemis would be the cool goddess to be. Aphrodite of the goddess of love and beauty. I would make everyone beautiful and no one would be different. I want everyone to love and no fighting. I think Artemis would be cool because she is the goddess of childbirth and the hunt.
This is a new author for me and would love to win and read this book. Thanks for the giveaway and the chance to win.

Under the Moon sounds like a great read and I can't wait to read more about it once it releases!

I think my power source would be the moon because I've always been such a night owl. My abilities would something along the lines of healing and some sort of elemental powers.

This looks like an interesting series. I look forward to reading the book.

MINE WOULD BE WIND, DON'T KNOW THE GODDESS BUT I COULD CONTROL THE WIND AND MAKE IT DO ALL KINDS OF THINGS FROM A GENTLE COOL BREEZE WHEN IT'S HOT OR A RAGING STORM.

August 30, 2011 5:38 PM

sun because up here in northeast US it's out more than moon.

You guys are so creative! I love it!

Thanks for all the comments, and for your patience while I worked way too many hours today. :)

Gwen, I'm glad you're hooked! :) If you like suspense/adventure, you might like UtM despite the paranormal element. It's fully grounded in today's society, and goddesses are just people like us. With powers. :)

Roxanne, thanks for jumping in for me! :)

Rebecca, Christine, yadkny, and Andrea, thanks for your interest in the book. I'll have excerpts available before too long. The book is in the latter editing stages now.

Chris, you could open up a really interesting discussion with the Aphrodite thing. :)

yadkny, very interesting that you'd go with those kind of powers. They are very similar to what Quinn has when she taps into the full moon!

Ooh, hotcha, I haven't thought of power over wind. That could be very deceptively powerful. And welcome--I'm hot from cooking dinner! LOL

August 30, 2011 6:06 PM

My source of power would be from the sun and would be used for healing.

Under the Moon sounds good; looking forward to reading it.

Wish my daughter was still up as she knows the gods and goddesses better than I do. Wasn't there one that could fly?

What would my power source be? I think it would be the sun. Drawing the energy from the light and using it to heal and protect. I can imagine a lot of uses for sun's power, blinding the enemy, leaving a firey trail of destruction, but only if needed. :-)

Love the mini excerpt. Thanks for a chance to win.

Congrats on your upcoming release; it looks really cool.
i'd like my power source to come from the oceans across the earth. I'm a real beach baby and am in awe of how much power oceans have and can unleash quickly and with deadly force - but of course - I'll use my powers for the good of mankind! Serious goddess complex! I'm not really sure what my powers will be but I'm sure that they are going to be mighty and mighty cool!

My power source would be from the earth, and my abilities would include shape-shifting and the being able to communicate with animals.

August 31, 2011 3:54 AM

Karen and Gail, sun power seems like it would be the best, doesn't it? So much potential, and neverending.

Wendy, I'm sure many goddesses could fly, but I can't actually remember them doing so. Flight is always my choice when we do the "what would be your superpower?" game. (My husband always picks invisibility. Typical, right? LOL)

LOL, MJB! I love the ocean. One of the secondary characters in Under the Moon gets her power there.

Morgan, I love how well your source and powers fit together. :)

September 09, 2011 4:11 AM

I would be a descedant of Poseidon's. My power source would be water. All bodies of water and its creatures would be at my command! BWAHAHAHA.

This series sounds great. I look forward in reading it.

Thanks,

I would love the power to talk to animals... it would be amazing to hear what they say and think!

September 10, 2011 1:08 PM

Yes! I'd love to know what my cat thinks when she's licking my husband's forehead. Or if the birds are egging each other on when they do the kamikaze run in front of your car.

And, of course, there are all kinds of beneficial applications in crime solving. :)

How exciting that you drew inspiration from Supernatural, since that is one of my all time favorite Sci-Fi shows. Can't wait to read Under the Moon & see if I can recognize Sam or Dean's influence.

I think if I was decended from a God/Goddess, I would chose Demeter, Goddess of the Harvest, with my power coming from the earth & having the gift to be able to grow anything.

lisagk, every time I smack my arm on the doorknob to the copy room at work, I wish I had healing gifts. :) Those play prominently in Under the Moon!

Thanks, Kay Dee! Good luck!

Drain, I love that you love Supernatural! I think Nick and Sam are distinctive, but have hints of the relationship the Winchester brothers have. I like the ability to grow anything, too--imagine how self-sufficient you could be!

Good luck, everyone!

Wow... I love this blog b/c it always gives me such wonderful new authors to explore! But it's bad for my wallet ;) This books sounds great! Went and added it to my new releases wish list.

I'd have to say, I'd like to be powered by the sun b/c I love a bright, warm sunny day. I'd love healing powers and the ability to communication w/ animals so I can finally hear what my dog is really thinking :)

Thanks for a great post and giveaway!

books4me, powerful women have been huge influences all my life. If they'd had goddess power, too, they'd have ruled the world. :)

Yay, another Supernatural fan! 8 days left, Kirsten!

Considering how much water covers the earth, Timitra, it would be hard to be more powerful! :)
