People often ask me how my real life inspires my writing…
It’s the truth that I often see stories in the events around me. Most often it happens when I’m climbing around the crumbling walls of a fort in the Caribbean islands or reading some weathered brass plack set beside some spot that one was somewhere important. Old photographs and paintings make me wonder what the people living through though those times did when faced with harsh facts. They were still people like you and I. They must have cracked jokes and teased their children and gotten on each other nerves too.
I’m not sure what it is that makes my mind wonder but it
surly does. To Conquer a Highlander was born out of a long standing fascination
with British and Scottish history. It isn’t just the kings and queens that keep
me reading articles on what happened five hundred years ago, it’s also the
facts about the men that marched in their armies and the knowledge that they
had families praying for their safe return.
Okay…a little deep but I really do find myself thinking
about things like that when I’m faced with a museum. The History Channel is on most of the time around here. Beyond
that, I am also a student of martial arts. I took my sons into a local studio
years ago and they wanted mommy to do it too. A full decade later, I’m still
trying to keep pace with the teenagers during my nightly practice. I find the
techniques very interesting. When I sit down to write anything with a fight
scene, I know a little bit about how it should work. This can be a little
troublesome to deal with when I’m out watching the latest action movie because
I can spot where they have spliced the film to cover up the fact that the actors
don’t have any true training.
The last thing that I do is historical re-enacting. My
family and I dress up and spend the weekend in period clothing. Drinking out of
a pewter mug just feels different than using a glass one from your modern
kitchen. Attending a supper where there is nothing but candle light casts a
very different mood across the guests than a dinner date at a local restaurant.
I like to think I infuse some of those details into my writing so that the
reader really gets a historical experience.
I hope so anyway…please drop by my website and let me know!

It's so cool that you guyz do re-enactments! Wicked! Are there rules you follow - like no using tech during that weekend, preparing foods using traditional methods etc.?
*hugs*

I love the dress in your picture, and I think dressing in period costumes and historical re-enacting sounds like a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to reading To Conquer a Highlander, I love historicals, especially featuring Highlanders.

Oh what fun to dress up & re-enact!!! Your characters sound like ones I want to read more about!

I think dressing in period costumes and re-enacting sounds like fun its something I realy want to try one day.

Your martial arts training & re-enacting must bring a personal touch to your writing that wouldn't normally be expected in historicals. (do you participate in organized re-enactments & involving various periods or limited ones, such as renaissance fairs?) It's an interesting approach and I'll have to pick up one of your books (would love to win this one as it sounds pretty good) to check it out.

The dress in the picture is gorgeous. The book sounds great, too. Got to admire your manual arts efforts, both for joining something that your children enjoy and for your preparation should you ever need to defend yourself or your children.

I loved Mary's inspiration for this story! My husband and I made a trip to England and Scotland several years ago. One of our favorite moments was when we visited Winchester Cathedral and when we opened the doors someone started playing the organ! Talk about inspiration - there's a story about that moment out there somewhere.
I'D LOVE TO CONQUEOR A HIGHLANDER!! LOL PURRRRRRRRRRRRR!
Oh I love history and anything Scottish is a love for me so this one sounds amazing! I'm a huge history buff myself so I can totally relate to the re-enactments and love of the past. My hubby and I did the Civil War re-enacting for a little while ourselves it was a lot of fun!
Your dress is lovely!
I'd love to be entered for this one!

That is so neat your family re-enacts period living and history. It gives much more meaning to how those in medievel and regency periods lived.
Thanks for sharing your inspiration.

It's great to have an activity that all of your family members are into. It's also great that your family enjoy the "cosplaying" or "re-dressing", whichever you prefer. AND that you look good in the period clothes is a bonus.
The cover art of your latest book looks fantastic. Love the cover model!
Ehehehe, I forgot the e-mail thing.

I've very much enjoyed your books. I too wonder what they felt, thought & wonder how wrong I am because I'm looking at it with modern sensibilities. History fascinates me. In addition to the re-enactments, you slso make some of your costumes, right? Did I dream reading that? Thanks for the glimpse inside!

Medieval knights and Highlanders, my favorites. We attend many reenactments from many different time periods and have costumeas for some of them. It does give you a better feel for what life was like back then.

Romances set in medieval Scotland were among my
first and favorite reads. Scotland is at the top
of my list of places I wish to visit someday. I
enjoyed reading about your martial arts training.
(My daughter, her husband, and their two sons are
totally immersed in Tae Kwando.) Thanks for sharing with us!
OOPS!

That totally rocks! i have not read an author that really knows how to fight when writing the fight seens. i cannot wait to read yours. and you re-enact. how do you find the time to write?
I really enjoy reading historicals. History wasn't my favorite subject back in my school days and so there is a lot about history that I just don't know. I've learned a lot about English, Irish and Scottish history by reading historical romance novels.
