Mixing Fantasy with Romance by C.L. Wilson

I am a long time reader of fantasy novels and romance novels.  And when I set out to write the Tairen Soul series, my intent was to combine my two favorite genres – epic fantasy and historical romance – in a way that had never been done before but also in a way that would (I hoped) appeal to the readers of both genres.
Mixing the two caused me a number of challenges, including (a) finding a way to mix the basic requirements of two distinct genres in a way that did credit to them both, and (b) creating a plot that could sustain both the romantic and the fantasy plot development over the course of several books.
A typical fantasy novel differentiates itself from all other forms of fiction via two (and most typically three) key elements:
(1)   an alternate world (or alternate earth reality) based on an imagined set of rules, typically inhabited by lifeforms that do not (and generally could not) exist in the real world  (Note: science fiction differs from fantasy in that the elements of the alternate world and any alternate lifeforms should have some basis in accepted scientific laws and theories.)
(2)   A fantasy quest.  The fantasy quest is the spine on which the entire book hangs (ie, taking the One Ring to Mordor and casting it into the fires of Mount Doom).  In epic fantasy, what’s at stake is something BIG – such as the fate of the entire world.  The story ends when the fantasy quest has been completed.
(3)   Magic.  This is the optional element. Most fantasy novels, though not all, do feature magic of some sort.  (I mean, why wouldn’t you? Who doesn’t like a little magic!)
A romance, on the other hand, requires one specific element—the romance—which is the spine on which the entire book hangs.  All other elements in the romance novel (the external quest/plot, emotional growth and change in the characters, etc) are all influenced by or occur because of the romance (and vice versa).  The story ends when the romance quest has been completed.

In the fantasy novel, the fantasy (the world, its magic, its unique rules) must be essential to the plot.  If you can take the story out of the fantasy world and set it on earth in the real world, your book is not really a fantasy.  It’s just a story set in a cool landscape.  Similarly, in a romance novel, the romance must be essential to the plot.  If you can take the romance out of the story, your book is not really a romance.  It’s a book about something else, and it just happens to feature a couple of people who fall in love during the course of the real story.
So, the challenge in combining epic fantasy with romance, was in combing four essential elements in such a way that did credit to them all.  So, my tasks were to:
(1)               Create a magical fantasy world with sufficient unique and vivid characteristics as to make the world seem interesting and real to readers, and create the world so that its unique aspects are directly linked to the book’s themes and plots.  The world had to be big enough, and complex enough to support an epic fantasy.

(2)               Create a Fantasy Quest, epic in scope, that was so tightly integrated with the book’s fantasy elements and themes that it could not take place in any other world.
(3)               Create a Romance Quest that was so tightly integrated with the book’s fantasy elements and themes that it could not take place in any other world.  The romance had to be big enough, with sufficient obstacles and challenges to sustain emotional/romantic growth over the course of several books.
(4)               Tie the Fantasy Quest and a Romance Quest so closely together that neither quest could be completed before the other—and neither could be completed without the other.
It’s been an exciting and rewarding experiment.  I never get tired of playing in my world, though I confess I’m looking forward to moving on to different characters and storylines.  One of my favorite aspects of writing the books has probably been creating the Feyan language.  I’m a language-lover, and taking the time to create my own language has been both a challenge and a joy.  (And I have a LOT more words than ever show up in the books!)
For the most part, I have had terrific fun writing this series.  I hope that you have had fun reading it!
QUESTION of the DAY: What is your favorite fantasy novel (if you’ve read one?)  What is your favorite romance?  What is it you like most about those books?

64 Response to Mixing Fantasy with Romance by C.L. Wilson

Great article with lots of information. I have to confess that my fantasy reading is limited to a Romantic Fantasy. I'm a "romance" first kind of girl--I love being guaranteed that happily ever after.

I was wondering, did you determine the four elements you had to mesh together before or after the first draft of the book?

Great article. My first fantasy/sci fi book was Anne McCaffrey's Pern series. Not sure what genre that falls under. But I probably liked it because it did include a little romance as a subplot. It was my favorite until your Fading Lands series.

Favorite romance: "Humm, much harder" as I have many I reread. I'd have to say Julie Garwood's THE SECRET has always topped my list. I love the Scottish flavor and the mystery behind the plot. It's as though I personally know all of her characters and could easily live with them in their world.

Question: Which did you find easier to write. The world, the quest, the magic, or the romance?

Janet (who's still waiting to see her beloved Belliard in a kilt!!!)

I have been a long time reader of historical romance. When Ms Wilson's books were introduced to me I fell in love with them. Once you pick one up you can't put it down.

The article is very interesting and has given me some insight into Ms Wilson's style of writing. She has woven the four elements mentioned like one of the best spirit weaves mentioned in her books.

If you are looking for a very enjoyable reading experience try one of her books you will be hooked and want more.

MaAbsolutely fasinating! I doubt most of your readers realized how much went into the seamless weave of The Tairen Soul series. The world you have created is rich and full of marvelous detail - the detail making it come alive - the language a unique gift, the characters vibrant with life.
Now let me see the first Fantasy series and still my favorite is the Shannara Series by Terry Brooks, my favorite Romance is so much harder to narrow to just one but if forced I guess it would hve to be The Wolf and The Dove by Kathleen Woodwiss, that book still lingers in the mind after all these years and bookcases of favorites.

December 18, 2009 11:27 AM

I can't remember what my first fantasy title was...but it was in JR. High - I do remember reading lots of David Edings and of course falling in love with the works of Piers Anthony. Hi Xanth series pulled me right in and then I was onto the Chaos series. Piers is still writing fabulous books. If you like Science Fiction / Fantasy check out our new website - www.SFFInsider.com - We hope you find some great books over there.

I don't have a favorite romance. I love so many...but I must say Dara Joy's early books are some of my favorites Rajar and Knight of A Trillion Stars being two that really stand out. Knight of A Trillion Stars is the first in the series. It's a Futuristic fantasy romance. I've introduced so many people to this series and they have all enjoyed it. I still have my copies from around 20 years ago. I’ve also enjoyed the Perfect Heros series by Kathleen Nance (More Than Magic) and paranormals by Carin Rafferty. I’m not sure if Carin is still writing but wow those were great books (Touch of Night). I still have these books – they even look old on my shelves lol. When Topaz Romance was around they put some awesome books out and LoveSpell is continuing that.

Who remembers the Topaz Man??? I do – I was in high school.

I highly recommend C.L. Wilson’s titles to you all and hope you find another author to cherish forever. I know her books will be on my bookshelf 20 years down the road. She’s going to be epic.

Wishing you all happy reading.

My favorite fantasy series... it has been a while since I read fantasy... I was into Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, but after the 10th book, I gave up... Fav romance... so many that I love, but SCARLETT by Alexandra Ripley always begs to be reread...
Love the HEAs, can not get enough!

Angie said I was wondering, did you determine the four elements you had to mesh together before or after the first draft of the book?

I knew what I had to do from the start. I didn't know *all* the details about how I was going to do it, but I understood from almost the very beginning what was standing in the way of the completion of the truemate bond and how the fantasy quest was going to have to play into that. It's evolved a bit over the years, but the basic concept remained pretty stable.

December 18, 2009 11:55 AM

Janet, you know I love Anne McA and her dragons :) Adore them isn't too strong a word. I was 13 or 14 when I discovered her dragonriders, and my BF at the time and I would sleep over and go down in her basement bedroom and playact like we were dragonriders who had Impressed our own dragons.

I wonder how the scots and the Fey would get along ;p

December 18, 2009 12:03 PM

LauriW - thanks so much for the kind words :)

Ravynn - I loved Wolf & the Dove. Aislinn and Wulfgar :) Well, I basically loved everything Kathleen Woodiwiss! I'm ashamed to say I never read past the first Terry Brooks book. Can't remember why.

December 18, 2009 12:30 PM

My first memory of fantasy is Bruce Coville and reading his Unicorn books. I really loved those books. As for fantasy romance there are too many to choose from, however your Tairen Soul series really hooked me right from the beginning.

I really love your books and I can't wait for the last in Rain and Ellie's story and the others whose stories are coming next.

December 18, 2009 1:36 PM

Tammie,
Thanks so much for having me here today.

I remember loving Dara's first Matrix of Destiny books. My sister and I were waiting and waiting for Traed's story. Apparently the lawsuit was settled and Dara mentioned publishing via "traditional" channels again.

I do remember the Topaz man *gg* Dating myself!

December 18, 2009 1:41 PM

Thanks for stopping by Heather! I've never read Bruce Coville, but just went to check out his website. Very cool. I'll have to check his books out.

And thanks for the kind words on the books. I'm so glad you enjoyed them!

Loved your article and I really LOVE your books. In my humble opinion you are one of the best Fantasy Authors around.I for one am glad you had to split the last book more for me to read. I hate the thought of this story being over. LOL

Hello, All.

There are so many books I love but if I had to chose my favorite romance is Outlander (and its sequels) by Diana Gabaldon. At the moment, my favorite fantasy is The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone series by Greg Keyes. I picked that because I just finished reading the second book in the series and it's still fresh in my mind!

Thanks,

What!?!? Ice cream doesn't burn fat......Oh, that explains my waist (or lack of one. Hmmm, Haagen Daz)

Favorite fantasy novel. I love Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson novels, Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and Charlaine Harris' Southern vampire novels. I consider them all fantasy w/ a smidge of romance. I just finished reading Ilona Andrews's two magic novels too and really enjoyed them having a hard time getting into the new Edge novel though (and Briggs' Charles and Anna books).

Why is it you can LOVE one series by an author and another series can leave you cold???

Interesting idea. I am not really big on fantasy novels, but the fantasy/romance combination is rather intriguing.

Two of my favorite romances are The Gift by Julie Garwood and Honest Illusions by Nora Roberts.

Favorite Romances: Um depends...I love JD Robb's Mix of suspense and romance between Roarke and Eve and also Celina Summer's Asphodel series is wonderful as well.

My favorite fantasy novels are the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I'm not certain they are fanasy, but I consider them to be. My favorite romance novel is Ransom by Julie Garwood. I think what I like most about them is the lengths the main characters go for love.

December 18, 2009 4:01 PM

How adroitly and beautfully you meld the elements you mention. Now, whenever I think of excellence in world-building, I think of your books.

I have some questions of my own. :-) What, in your view, distinguishes classic fantasy from urban fantasy? Setting alone? The types of protagonists? The nature of the "quest"? How would you classify, say, Emma Bull's War for the Oaks?

And how do you feel about a beloved series, yours or any author's, coming to an end?

By the way, thanks, C.L., for all the time and care you've devoted to guiding other writers. Your insights are invaluable!

December 18, 2009 4:16 PM

Great post! I am big into the romance myself! I have not read a lot of fantasy books, but I think I would enjoy them! My favorite romance book of all times would be Gone With the Wind! I also read romance for the happy endings although GWTW didn't have a happy ending!

I do not have a favorite book, I have a favorite series! I love C.L. Wilson's Fey series that she is currently writing! The mix of fantasy and romance is absolutely perfect and very hard to put down...

December 18, 2009 4:35 PM

Loved the article!! I was so happy when i discovered this series. All the time i was reading i could imagine the whole story, it's as if i was living it myself. I could even see the weaves in my head. I can't help but sigh every time i think of Rain and Gaellen! If only they were real! lol.
Thanks for the gift of these books, you sincerely have an amazing imagination and an amazing gift to be able to put into words. Thank you for sharing the Tairen Soul's story with us!

December 18, 2009 4:44 PM

Hello nice article and happy holidays I do also enjoy romance and fanasy when I'ts done right.

One of my first favorite fantasy series was the Narnia series, and then I found Pern, Tolkien, Xanth, etc. My current favorite is the one I am reading, the Tairen Soul Quintet. I am convinced that you are a master of the Spirit weave to produce this series.

Hi, C.L.! You are a master of fantasy romance! Your website is fantastic! Everyone should visit your site and click on "The World".

My favorite fantasy romance is "Beauty and the Beast". My favorite genre is Historical Western Romance. Kathleen E. Woodiwiss is the lady who set the standard for me for historical romance. Her book, "Ashes in the Wind" is number one for me.

Melanie - Thank you! And I'm glad you weren't upset by the book split. :) It wasn't my druthers by now I'm kind of happy it worked out that way. I would have had to cut so much that I really liked.

Booklover (TammyD) - I haven't read Greg Keyes (making note to myself).

Anne says What!?!? Ice cream doesn't burn fat
hehehe....glad you caught that. I've been sniggering over it all day! :p

As to why you can LOVE one series by an author and another series can leave you cold, I think that all pertains to the type of story you like to read. the subject matter may just not interest you, or the characters may not feel sympathetic to you.

Dawn - my sister was telling me about Trudi Canavan's books. I haven't tried them out yet, btu they're on my list :)

Dawn asked Is ther more coming after Tarian Soul or are you planning a new series for your readers?

After Tairen Soul is done, i'm going to finish a book set in a different world. It's called THE WINTER KING, and its about two warring families of weathermages. After that, it's back to the Fading Lands for Bel and Gaelen's stories :)

Patsy & Susan Mo, thanks for coming out today!

1. What Is Your Favorite Fantasy Novel (If You’ve Read One?)
My Favorite Fantasy Novel Would Have To Be J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit Series. I Just Loved Them As A Kid And Then When I Got Older It Was Amazing Putting The Movie Up Against What I Had Always Pictured In My Mind As A Kid.

2. What Is Your Favorite Romance?
My Favorite Romance Book Would Have To Be Gentle Warrior By Julie Garwood. It Was My Second Romance Novel I Ever Read And It Began My Love Of All Things Julie Garwood. Since Then I Have Collected All Her Books.

3. What Is It You Like Most About Those Books?
With J. R. R. Tolkien It Was Something New And Exciting. A World With Mythical Creatures,A Wizard,A Dragon,And All Sorts Of Other Beings. And With Julie Garwood It Was All About The Perfect Man And The Romance He Inspired In You. It Was The Man That All Woman Want But Can Never Really Attain.

KZ Snow said...What, in your view, distinguishes classic fantasy from urban fantasy? Setting alone? The types of protagonists? The nature of the "quest"? How would you classify, say, Emma Bull's War for the Oaks?

Urban Fantasy is typically paranormal/fantasy/futuristic novel set in some urban setting on earth. The protagonist tends to be female and is usually very self-sufficient (ie, "kickass") Urban fantasy also tends to have a very gritty, edgy feel. I haven't read War for the Oaks, but after reading the PW review and Amazon review, it sounds very much like urban fantasy. Romance is usually a secondary plot.

Classic fantasy often features an unlikely hero (usually someone of humble origins who manages to change the world) It's often set on an alterate world. It frequently features magic. It's often set in historical times (sword & sorcery).

And how do you feel about a beloved series, yours or any author's, coming to an end?

Well, as the writer - happy! As the reader - not so much. I want the end, but I don't want the end to mean its over. I like spin off books, so long as they can stand on their own as a good read and not just a rehash of the original series. :)

I have to say that this series is one of my all time favorites. I loved the Hobbit and Pern but this feels more grown up, maybe it's the romance.

I can't say that I have a favorite romance or fantasy book as I love way too many of them and my house reflects that.

I do have a question though. Billy tells everyone that these are really fantasy books but you could only find a romance publisher to print them. Do you have many fans that are strictly fantasy fans? And do you have a lot of men that follow this series?

Merry Christmas,

Like your 4 elements for epic fantasy and romance. Hadn't really thought of it that way.
Fantasy that I have read has been in the Juvenile and Young Adult section primarily. I read a few Anne McCaffrey books in college. I got interested in history and mystery. Didn't discover romance until a little over 10 years ago. My favorites, any of Julie Garwood's historicals, especially THE PRIZE which was the first romance I read. The Wolf and The Dove by Woodiwiss is another favorite.
I have a couple of books from the Tairen series, but they are still in my TBR pile.
Hope the release of Queen of Song and Souls is going well.

Jmarksgirl - Thanks for coming out! And best of luck w/your own writing.

Dawn - I always want romance in my books. :)

Carolina - yep! Bel and Gaelen will both get their own story. I've been plotting them for a long time. :)

delitealex - I love Anne Bishop's books. They are fabulous!

Terry - hey! (waving) I can only imagine how many books you've got. but i know that kindle cuts down on some of the shelf-clutter :)

You asked Billy tells everyone that these are really fantasy books but you could only find a romance publisher to print them. Do you have many fans that are strictly fantasy fans? And do you have a lot of men that follow this series?

LOL, they are a 50/50 blend of fantasy and romance - or at least I tried to make them so. The first two probably feel more traditionally "romance novelish" than the last two, but the romance is still there and is still as much lynchpin of the plot as the fantasy. It's just that Rain and Ellysetta have moved into a different stage of their relationship, and the focus is now on how they help each other overcome those last fears rather than the first, giddy rush of love.

As to fans, yes, i have quite a number of men (and women) who write to me. Many say, "I never read romance but...." Many say, "Why is this in the romance aisle? It should be in fantasy!" conversely, I have quite a number of women write to say, "I never read fantasy but..." :)

My BFF is insane about your books - the world you have created has absolutely captured my fancy - I have just recently started the first in the series and love it.

I love romance and erotic fiction but fantasy fiction takes me back to childhood, from Tolkein to McCaffrey to Robin McKinley. I started re-reading more fantasy fiction when my 12 year old started looking for things to read - now I try to balance my juicy reads with YA and fantasy.

Happy holidays!

I read so much - a mix of fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal, historical romance, science fiction, contemporary romance. It is really hard to choose a favorite fantasy - I've read a lot of the books mentioned by others, Anne McCaffrey, Dara Joy, Kathleen Nance, Charlaine Harris, Jim Butcher. My favorite urban fantasy author right now is Jeaniene Frost and scifi romance author is Ann Auirre. For romance, my favorite book lately was Eloisa James' A Duke of Her Own.

I appreciate your definition of fantasy as well as the elements within.

I've seen some books marked as fantasy that didn't follow the elements and perhaps that is why I was left disappointed after reading them?

I have read your first book and can't wait to read the others.

Thanks for the explanation of a romantic fantasy. My favorite fantasy books right now are the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning and the Mercy Thompson series. However, neither of them could really be classified as a romance...yet.

I enjoy the J. Frost series about Cat and Bones. That is definitely a hot romance.

My favourite fantasy books change every time I begin a new series so right now I love Mercedes Lackey. I have to say that one of my all time favourite series is still by Janny Wurtz, the Empire trilogy. Mara is a heroine of mine and has been for years.

As for romance, nothing could trump Bertrice Small's Skye O'Malley series for me for a long time, although I have read some fabulous books and probably some better ones. I think I just admired her spirit and her fight for life as a young teenager and it stuck with me. Those books are still on my bookshelf and I am loath to part with them.
And the dragonriders of Pern? Just introduced them to my son who is devouring them too, just like I did.

I loved reading your article and I love your books. I have always wondered myself how the Scots and fey would get along. Interesting!!!

Favorite fantasy: I read a lot of fantasy so it's hard to pick a favorite but I like Tolkien and lately I've been liking Brandon Sanderson's books.

Favorite romance: I haven't been reading romance that long but I usually prefer historical or fantasy romances. The Education of Mrs. Brimley by Donna MacMeans and The Grail King by Joy Nash are two that come to mind as ones that I rather liked.
