Amelia Gray on A Duke To Die For

I like to start every story with “wouldn’t it be wonderful if”, and I didn’t break that tradition with A Duke To Die For. Though I would like to take credit for coming up with that phrase, I can’t. I heard a Harlequin editor say it in a workshop several years ago, and took it as my motto and it’s never let me down.

When I started thinking about an idea for a new Regency story, my first thought was “wouldn’t it be wonderful if my heroine was a young lady who desperately wanted to be in charge of her own life, but couldn’t because her father’s will said she must have a guardian?” That sounded intriguing to me so I kept going.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the heroine’s new guardian was a young and handsome, eligible duke who set her heart to racing? Oh, yes, I really liked that idea. And, wouldn’t it be wonderful if his life was chaotic and undisciplined, and he needed an organized and orderly person just like my heroine in his life? Hey, opposites attract so that worked for me.

Sometimes this technique even inspires a twist or two that I wouldn’t have ordinarily come up with otherwise, so I keep going. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if my heroine believes she is cursed because all her previous guardians have died mysteriously, and she doesn’t want the handsome duke to be the next victim? That would certainly add a dash of intrigue!

I keep going with my motto until I have the entire romance of the story plotted with these kinds of sentences, right down to the last wouldn’t it be wonderful if the duke decided he didn’t want the heroine to marry anyone but him, and he knew exactly how to woo her back into his arms?

I think you get the idea of how my motto inspires me whenever I begin a new book, and so far it has served me well.

Hi Amelia, Love the motto for how you write your books. That is some what of the things that always gets me hooked on a book, that "what if" factor.

Hi Amelia,

You are a new-to-me author, but I confess...I have several of your older books on my TBR shelves...guess I should pull some of those out and start reading! Now, wouldn't it be wonderful if I had a copy of 'A Duke to Die For' in my hand right now? Yes it would, but boo hoo...I don't. So I should be getting myself off to the bookstore to get my copy!

Beautiful cover, Amelia.

What a great motto, by the way. I use it when I write as well. I think if you don't ask, what if, you don't come up with an origional plot or circumstances that feed readers what they're craving. Origional ideas and fabulously deep characters.

Good luck and please enter me in your contest. Thanks.

Your motto sounds like a great way to start out writing your books. Regency is my favorite era. I am a lover of historical books. A Duke To Die For is a great title, and definitely sounds like one of my kind of books. I will put this on my TBR pile for this year.

I heard great things about this book at my local Borders Book Review Club. The local bookseler, Marcy Dodge, was just raving about it and passing it around to the group. I always take Marcy's advice when it comes to great books.

You have selected a great storyline for that book. I love those kind of romances. Kind of opposite, kind of just right to drive each other crazy and right into each other's arms. Can't wait to read it.

Hi Amelia I love the way your going with this book. I just have a feeling that our heroine is not cursed but I bet she has an enemy that maybe wants her to keep her by herself with no protection. And since our heroine is wealthy maybe this person wants her money too. I like that our hero will do anything to get his woman. Lol

Hi Amelia! Your post was by far the most inspiring one I've read so far. I've never even thought to start writing a book that way! That is a really great motto to have, not just for writing a book but for life in general! Like.... "wouldn't it be wonderful if I could have a house with one room being a library!". I can only dream. lol. Your book sounds very intriguing and will definitely be on my reading list! Good luck on your future writing!
